Word closing after I click on "Repair Now"

When I start Word or Excel, I get a pop-up message that says, "...Word has run into an error that is preventing it from working..." with boxes "Repair now, Help, Close". When I click on "Repair now", Word completely closes within a minute or two. What's the fix for this?

    Welcome Gwyn,

I'm an independent advisor and I'm here to help you. Follow these steps:

    1. Open Control Panel > Programs and Features
    2. Click Microsoft Office in the list of installed applications
    3. At the top, click "Change" > On the resulting dialog, click "Repair"
    4. Choose the online repair

Let me know if you solve.

    Regards.

Instead of clicking the Repair Now button, which often fails, start an Office repair "manually"; see https://support.office.com/en-US/Article/Repair-an-Office-application-7821d4b6-7c1d-4205-aa0e-a6b40c5bb88b.

If repairing Office fails again after the computer restart, you may have to uninstall Office manually and start fresh; see https://support.office.com/en-us/article/manually-uninstall-office-4e2904ea-25c8-4544-99ee-17696bb3027b?ui=en-US&rs=en-US&ad=US.

Before you uninstall, make sure that you have the information you need to reinstall. For example, if you have a subscription, make sure that you can access your Office account viahttps://www.office.com/myaccount.

Hello Lattanino, and thank you for your instructions. When I got to "Change", no dialog box came up, so I clicked on it again. No dialog box and no sign anything was taking place except considerable flashing of the light on my computer that indicates hard disc activity. After two hours, I clicked on "Change" again, and a message popped up. Can't remember exact words but it indicated repair action not yet finished. Several hours later, same message, decided no upgrade or repair should take 5 hours, that the repair was in some kind of endless loop, so I just X'd out to close. Started Word and got same "Repair now" pop-up.
