How do I vertically align text in a table in Word?

I have a Word document.  I have a table.  I enter text into the table.  The text floats at the top of the field, out of the line of the underline in the adjacent field.  In 25 years of using Word I have never needed text to float out of line of everything else.  Not sure why it's an option let alone the default.

Highlighted text, right clicked in the table and chose Table Properties > Cell > Vertical Options > Bottom.  Didn't change anything.

Highlighted text, chose Layout > Align and all options are grayed out.

I would tell what version I'm on but I have no idea.  The Help > About menu option is gone.  There is no 'About' in the file area.  I guess it's the latest version, whatever that is... going with 365 since I've heard coworkers lamenting about that number.  Not sure why MS made all of these changes that don't have any benefit.  The old Office was so much faster and easier.

So...how do I bring my table's text down into line with everything else?

    The "Bottom" value on the Cell tab of the Table Properties dialog box aligns cell contents to the bottom of the cell. If the cell contains blank paragraphs, changing the cell alignment won't make a difference.

    Click the ¶ icon on the Home tab to display all nonprinting marks.

    Here is what I see after changing the cell alignment to "Bottom" for all cells:

    In the above example, all table rows have a variable height.

    I was having the same problem. I had to first change my line spacing to auto or 0, before alignment feature would work.

    This should be one way to do it.

    This should be another way to do it. 

    The text was highlighted, just didn't come across that way in the screen snip.
