I have a new chromebook and have installed excel & office via google play.

It was my understanding that the free version allowed editing of files.  However I only have the options of read-only or to pay for 365.

If a free editable version not available?

I know I can edit files in chrome.

    Hi

There are completely free versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and other Microsoft apps at OneDrive.com.

The desktop version is not free.

    Thanks for your reply.

    The following link states

"You can view files and do basic editing in the Office mobile apps if you're signed in with your Microsoft Account (it's free and you can use an existing email). If you have a Microsoft 365 subscription, you can sign into the app with the account associated with your subscription to use more advanced editing features with Microsoft 365."

I therefore would expect to be able to do basic editing.

In order to edit files, you have to set up a free Microsoft account. (A free Microsoft account is not associated with a subscription.) Is that what you have done?

Also, make sure that you have a supported Chrome operating system; see https://sites.google.com/a/chromium.org/dev/chromium-os/chrome-os-systems-supporting-android-apps.
