Anonymous

My dissertation is due in one week and all of a sudden, with every indent i get these strange lines above and below the text.  Inititally i thought they were section breaks of some sort, but they are not.  I've tried everything i can think of and search for to resolve the problem, to no avail.  Any help would be most appreciated.  Thanks. To clarify, I need to indent a number of paragraphs, but need to stop the automatic lines above and below, that appear with every paragraph I indent.

Did you look at the page I linked?

Turn on display of non-printing formatting characters. Ctrl+Shift+8 (Ctrl+*).

Select the entire paragraph including before and after the lines.

On the Home tab in borders, select no border.

    Hi ,

I am Lyn, an Independent Advisor and a fellow Microsoft user. Here to assist you in solving an issue.

Please select the paragraph. On the Home tab, in the Paragraph group, click "Decrease Indent" (Hover over the buttons to see the label) continuously until the paragraph is placed to your desired spacing from the left margin.

Your issue is caused by the automatic indenting feature in Word wherein when you press tab key, the paragraph automatically indents.

Here's how to stop the function:

Go to File > Options > Proofing > Click AutoCorrect Options button > AutoFormat as you type > Uncheck the box for "Set Left- and First-Indent with Tabs and Backspaces" > Click OK. Click OK.

These lines look like paragraph borders.

With the screenshot above, to remove the lines, please uncheck the box for "Border lines" found under Apply as you type.
