Hi MS community,

I was using a powerpoints Screen recording function to record a webinar.

After completing the recording and saving the powerpoint and re-opening it this error message pops up

And when trying to play the recorded video this error pops up

I have tried the following to fixes recommended by online sources (youtube):

  • Using the repair powerpoint repair function,
  • Making the desktop a Trusted area,
  • Using the Run command to open the powerpoint through safe mode,
  • Using a codex reader to fix the video,
  • Uploading powerpoint to google drive,
  • Zipping the powerpoint to extract the video.

Please advise any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Mervin,

Sorry for the inconvenience it may have caused and thanks for sharing the detailed steps you have taken with us.

To troubleshoot the issue, there’re still some methods you can try:

  1. Update Office to the latest version. With Office updated, some issues would get resolved. So it’s a good idea to keep Office up to date.
  2. Try using the built-in proper media compatibility settings in PowerPoint to fix the video or audio that won't play. Below are the procedures.
  1. Open the PowerPoint file and click the File menu on the most left position of the top bar.
  2. Select "Info". Then PowerPoint will detect if the embedded media is incompatible with the program. If so, the Optimize Media Compatibility option will appear. Select that option and embedded media will be optimized by the PowerPoint.
  3. Let the wizard scan the embed media. If the immediate solution is available, the wizard will resolve the problem automatically.

If the Optimize Media Compatibility option does not resolve the "Codec/Media Unavailable" issue on PowerPoint, it will at least show you the bane and you can do something further based on it.

  1. Clear the TEMP folder.

Empty the temporary files of PowerPoint for tons of them might affect the working of PowerPoint. Here's how to clean the TEMP folder in Windows 10:

  1. Press the combined keys: [Win]+[R].
  2. In the prompted window on the left bottom of the desktop, type in the following path**:%temp%**
  3. Select all the files with the TMP extension.
  4. Delete the files.
  5. Restart your computer.

Then you can open the PowerPoint presentation again and see whether the videos in question can play now.

If the issue persists, we would like to collect some information to further check it:

  1. Which version of Office do you have? After starting PowerPoint, click on File > Account, please take a screenshot of the Product Information part and share it with us.
  2. Does the issue occur on all PowerPoint files? Or just this certain one?
  3. Did all the steps you have tried not work and the video cannot be saved?

Best regards,

Madoc
