Microsoft Teams Kills all Network Connectivity During Calls

Despite having a good WiFi or Ethernet connection, regardless of which network I'm on, if I join a Microsoft Teams call, all network connectivity stops working and teams simultaneously reports poor call quality and no network connectivity. All this while on an active call which I can see and hear. Here's a full description of symptoms.

Every time I connect to a Teams call:

  • Incoming call quality is ok. I can hear and see others.
  • Outgoing call quality is very poor. Others say my voice is breaking up.
  • If I unmute and speak for more than a few seconds, I am booted from the call.
  • If I stay muted I can stay on the call indefinitely.
  • I can share my screen just fine, I don't get kicked from the call.
  • Teams periodically puts up a warning symbol in the call controls reporting poor connectivity.
  • Teams puts up a blue banner stating that I have been disconnected from the internet.
  • (Intermittent) Teams puts up a big overlay on top of the whole app saying I have been disconnected
  • The call continues though all of this, including voice and video.
  • All other network connectivity is broken (e.g.: Browsers cannot load pages, network drives stop working)
  • Text chat features work fine (but not during calls, where they fail to work like all other network activity)

The instant the call ends, all the symptoms stop. I can access network resources again. My wifi connection is fine. I've tested using wired networking and encounter the exact same issue. I've also tried various audio devices and disconnecting all peripherals as longshot solutions. No dice. I don't have anything weird on my system as far as I am aware. Teams works fine on other machines but not on my primary laptop.

This issue not only makes Microsoft Teams itself nearly unusable, it knocks my whole system offline for the duration of the call, which is incredibly frustrating.

I'm booting into Windows 10 on a 2015 MacBook Pro 13". I have all the latest patches for everything. I've seen two other people here who have what I think is the same issue as mine, but their question threads didn't have any solutions either, and now they're locked.

Does anyone have any idea what could be going wrong? Any solutions? Any more info needed from me about my setup?

I am getting this issue in both Teams and Outlook. But the issue does not occur on the Web versions of these products.

Our servers are on Google Cloud, so we need to connect to GCP VPN, not long after connecting Outlook and Teams will both lose connection, however nothing else does. Internet browsers work fine, and so do streaming apps like Spotify / Sky Go / Prime. It seems to be a Microsoft App issue.

I am running MacOS Catalina on a 2019 Mac Pro.

Having the same exact issue as others have stated. Within 3-7 minutes of a Team meeting, others in the meeting will see that I have "frozen" and then about 40 seconds later my Ethernet connection will drop out completely. To regain connectivity and re-join the meeting, I simply unplug the network cable and plug it back in. After the initial loss of connectivity, it doesn't happen again a second time after re-connecting to the meeting. I am using a Lenovo Yoga C740-15IML i7 Windows 10 Enterprise.  The dock is a Lenovo Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 Gen 2 Dock Model DK1841. I have an open ticket with Team's support but they have not been able to figure it out it. It appears to be an issue with the specific driver/hardware used in certain models of docks. The DK1841 uses a Realtek chipset and I suspect there is some sort of incompatibility with the current driver or configuration in the Teams Desktop app.

As a workaround, I have found this issue does not happen in the following situations:

    1. Using a USB-C to Ethernet Adapter connected directly to laptop
    2. Connecting via Wi-Fi
    3. Using the Teams web / browser version

Hopefully this can be sorted out soon...

Piling on... same issue.  Lenovo T480s, ethernet connection which will drop 10-15 minutes into a call.  I've noticed that it happens more when I'm presenting, usually not when I'm in the audience.   It's puzzling why that would be the case but it's a clear pattern for me.

The laptop switches to WiFi but I can't reconnect on WiFi at that point, I need a reboot.  For next time I'll try starting the call on WiFi from the get-go to see if that allows me to get through my full presentation without issues.

I am experiencing the same issue since yesterday, on two different Macbook (one Pro, one Air) and this morning also on an iPad.

Basically, while in the call with Teams, not only the connectivity is broken, but also the Wifi is disabled! So, to reconnect I have to go to the Wifi and re-activate it, but still, after reconnecting, the line is dropped (and the wifi disabled) after a short while.

    Really annoying.

    Hi Shawn-

We need you help and hopefully you can really save us from insanity, sir. On our work laptop, we use Microsoft Teams for work daily, and every single day we go to sign in, it 100% does not stay connected to our home wi-fi. We have to wind up using our mobile hotspot for Microsoft Teams to stay connected to get our work done, which eats up chunks & chunks of data, which is costing us big time $.

We are at our wits end as to why this is happening. To give you some insight, this is what we do:

    1. turn on computer
    2. make sure wifi is on
    3. connect to our work VPN
    4. sign on to Microsoft Teams

    * Our wifi is solid and strong (router is in same room as our work laptop) and our wifi connects all our other many wireless devices in our house just fine. Our wifi also works great on our work laptop when we are not trying to connect to Microsoft Teams. For some confusing reason, Microsoft Teams is not connecting like it should.

Hope I have made this issue clear for you. Have you heard of this, and is there any workaround or solution to allow us to use Microsoft Teams via our home wi-fi & not our mobile hotspot, sir?

    Sincerely,

    Brian
