Adding VMs to Virtual Desktop Host Pool removes previous VMs

Hi guys,

I'm really struggling to add VMs to a Host Pool that's been operational for a while now. I created it originally with one VM, we'll call it VM1. I've created a generalized image of VM1 and spun up VM2 from it, I try to add this to the host pool using the two MSIs referred to in the MS guide but it replaces VM1, now there is still only 1 VM in Host Pool but it is VM2.

So I try to spin up a VM from this image using the "Add hosts" option from within the Host Pool itself, I set it to spin up two VMs just for ease of testing, I now have:

VM1 Original
VM2 Image - Manually added to Host Pool
VM3 & VM4 created by Host Pool

The Host Pool now still only has one VM in it, which is now VM4, the last VM to be created. VM1,2,3 all exist, are operational etc. but are not within the Host Pool. These VMs are generalised (they join the Domain fine as individual machines without issues). What the heck am I missing here? I cannot believe such a simple thing (clone VM, add to host pool) is so hard.

Any and all help appreciated.
Miles

    @Miles

    Welcome to Microsoft Q&A Platform, thanks for posting your query here.

    Based on the details shared, this unexpected behavior is mostly because of the way the image is created.

    It is not recommended to create an image from a VM that is already in a host pool. The recommended way to create a custom image is described here.

    Also, check the agent logs and if you have regenerated a host pool registration key?

    Please follow this and see if that helps solve your issue.

    Hope this helps.
