Hello there!

I wrote my thesis on the thesis template given to us from the institute. However, when I want to print out, square brackets, embedded template items appear in the printer preview and after printing.

1.As seen in Picture 1, template elements are placed by institute template.

  1. The template items and brackets are still visible in the preview in the Print option.

  1. The same problem persists when we convert it to PDF. They are visible when we get hard copy.

I'm waiting your helps!! Thanks!!

John's suggestion to Delete the Bookmarks is worth a try but I'm not sure what the overall effect may be... It depends on the purpose served by the Bookmarks. If they only represent the fields supplied in the template there should be no problem but if you've created any for cross-references or other purposes deleting them will break the links.

If that doesn't work the only logical conclusion I can come up with is that there is some form of corruption in the document. The software is current & the check to display Bookmarks is cleared so the Bookmark symbols should not even display on screen. And as I wrote before, even if they are displayed they should not show up in the preview, a PDF or a printed copy. Another indication is that the Field Shading is displayed despite the fact that When Selected appears to be the current setting in your View Preferences [I don't know the language but I'm guessing that is a correct interpretation.]

One approach is to use File> Save As to create a new copy of the document which may produce a clean version that doesn't present the problem. If you try this I'm offering the following suggestions:

    • Save the new copy using the .docx file type
    • Use a much shorter, simpler file name
    • In the new document confirm the correct Preferences for Bookmarks & Field Shading

If that doesn't resolve it you can try doing a Maggie to clear the corruption:

    1. Command+A [Select All]
    2. Shift+← [deselect final ¶]
    3. Command+C [Copy]
    4. Command+N [create a new blank document]
    5. Command+V [Paste into new document]
    6. Command+S [Save the new document]

Be sure to not omit step #2: That ending ¶ carries a lot of hidden information which probably includes the cause of the corruption. Some reformatting or other touch-up may need to be done in the new document.

It looks like my hunch about updates may have been dead on... The version you have is out of date by approximately 18 months. Version 16.37 is the current general release.

Use Help> Check for Updates in order to bring the software to a current state. If yo get a message to the effect that "no updates are available" it indicates that your version of Microsoft AutoUpdate [MAU] is equally obsolete. Use this lin to install the current version  of MAU then Restart your Mac & update Office.

The brackets appear to be Bookmark indicators.

Go to Word> Preferences> View to see whether the box is checked for Bookmarks. If it is, clear the check then view in Preview again.

However, even if that addresses the immediate need, Bookmark indicators by design do not print even when displayed when editing the document. That suggests that there is some other consideration involved. The most likely is a matter of updates.

Please go to Word> About Microsoft Word to determine the present Version of your Office software. Include that in your reply.

Additionally, check the Epson support site to see if there is a driver/firmware update for your specific model based on your version of macOS.
