How to Reverse Cleared Formatting

I was trying to remove all the hyperlinks in my document and after a quick google search, I decided to highlight the whole document, then use the command: CTRL+SHIFT+F9

Not only did it remove my hyperlinks, but it removed ALL the formatting in my document, including page numbers and Table of Contents. I can't figure out how to reverse this. I even opened up another document, and all the formatting was removed from that one as well. It also doesn't work when I try to now add page numbers or Table of Contents, etc.

I need to restore the formatting to this document, and ideally restore the default formatting for all documents.

I am not tech-savvy and this is a very important document. Please help!

Try, with only a new document open, pressing Fn+Opt+F9. Then open one of the problem documents. That is the shortcut to toggle display of all Field Codes.

    Hi Charles,

Thanks so much for your reply and that helpful link.

I am using a Mac. I think you're right in that I had used Cmd, not Cntrl. But I think I must have also done something else incorrectly without realizing it because I had tried Cmd+Z immediately after the initial mistake and it hadn't reversed it.

I was now able to "reverse" things by highlighting the text and hitting Fn+Shft+F9. Although, I had to do this individually for the body of the text, page numbers, table of contents, and then for each footnote, one-by-one.

I opened up some older documents and noticed that the formatting needs to be corrected on all of those as well.  I even tried opening up a document in Word that wasn't created on my computer, and the formatting on that one also only showed the codes.

Do you know if there's a way I can have everything automatically reversed for all of my documents and restore Word back to normal?

    Thanks!

Letting us see what you are seeing could help. Go to where the Table of Contents should be and take a screenshot.

Here's how to post a screenshot:

(Per Bob Jones (aka Cybertaz), the parts about screen capture only apply to Windows. On the Mac you would use Cmd+Shift+4. See his screenshot for various shortcuts. https://filestore.community.support.microsoft.c... )

    Hi

Are you using a Mac? I ask because the commands you use appear to be for Windows.

AFAIK, Ctrl+Shift+F9 does not clear formatting, it converts field to text.

It should not have changed page numbers because they should be in the footer or header, not in the body.

Are you sure it is not Cmd+Shift+F9 on the Mac?

In any case, once this has been done, the only solution is UnDo (Cmd+Z). If you have closed and reopened the document, it is too late for that.

Other than that, a backup of your previous document.

Are you sure you did not hit Opt+F9 which would show field codes instead of results?
