Heading numbering so I can caption properly

Hi,

I have written a long document and I am trying to retrofit the formatting.

For my table and figures I am trying to have them as Table 1.1,table 1.2 and so on.

I had not previously captioned all my tables, I just postioned the text below them.

Now that I am trying to caption them it will not number them properly.

Dialog box pops up with "There's no chapter number to include in the caption or page number. To apply chapter numbers, use Multilevel List button on the Home tab and select a numbering scheme that's linked to the Heading styles".

Does anyone have a step by step way to tackle this.  I have listed each chapter and subheading as Level 1, Level 2....???

Thanks,

Paul

For chapter numbering to work with captions, you have to make use of the built-in headings for chapter numbering (for assistance with setting up the numbering, see https://shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/numbering20072010.html).
