Error on file upload after rendering powerpoint to a video

Hi there.  I'm using Powerpoint's built in renderer to mp4.  The render works fine, but I get an error while saving the file.

The error is:

<filename> could not be uploaded because the destination location is no longer available.  Do you want to save to a different location?

The source of the original pptx is in a sharepoint folder, and was directly loaded from that remote location.  Powerpoint's default save location is in the same sharepoint folder, which I accepted.  However, after the render I get the above error that the file could not be saved.

Saving locally works; I can then manually copy the file to sharepoint.

I replicated the issue on two different machines:

  1. windows 10
    • win 10 version 2004
    • powerpoint version 2005 (Build 12827.20336)
  2. win 7
    • powerpoint version 1902 (Build 11328.20158)

Hi Nk31,

Welcome to the community.

I tested on my end based on your description and I received the same error.

What I observed is that if I select the document library which is synced to File Explorer using OneDrive sync client, the video (.mp4) will save and upload to the site library, but if I save directly to the browser, it will give the above error.

So, both, exporting and saving process (export from PPTx to MP4 and save to team site) works when we save it to a local folder. I think when we export and save the video, PowerPoint is not able to contact the server at the backend when we direct save to browser and this could be the reason it is throwing the error about the location which is obviously available when accessed through a browser.

In this scenario, we have two options:

1.       First export PPTx to mp4 and save it to local folder and then upload it to the library.

2.       Use OneDrive sync client to sync your destination site library and while exporting/saving PPTx to mp4, select the local folder (by clicking File>Save As<Browse).

Further, I know to achieve this, you have to perform few extra steps and I understand the inconvenience caused by this, to make sure the Product team get to know about this, I’ll suggest you use feedback took right from the PowerPoint app itself, click File > Feedback. This is the quickest route to get your comments to the developers’ ears, this will have more impact as the feedback is coming directly from the customer.

We appreciate your understanding. Have a nice day and stay safe.

With sincerest regards,

Neha

Thanks for confirming the issue.  I'll use your suggestion and submit this as a bug in powerpoint feedback.
