Guidance for creating/modifying Word styles in dotm XML files

Hi all,

It's been a long time since I created Word templates, and specifically paragraph styles. I'm wanting to do that now.

I know I can just create and open up a Word template, and amend the styles as needed through the UI. I don't have a problem doing that, but I'm curious about doing it using the XML files under the dotm package. As a software developer, I'm very familiar working with XML, but I was hoping to crack it for a Word MVP, MS team member, or other expert, who might point me in the right direction for explanations about the relevant XML files under the dotm package, and guidance for how to do the modifications.

Hi Graham,

In any Word file, you can change the extension to .zip. Usually, I simply add that at the end. That lets you open the XML container.

When you open the zip folder that was a document or template, look for the Word folder and then Styles.  The screenshot above is of the Styles.xml.
