Modern bug: deleted news post site pages still appear in news.aspx page

We have a news web part configured to show "selected sites" on a site home page. One of those sites has 1 news post, but in the news.aspx archive page, 4 items from that site display. 3 of those were deleted more than 6 months ago, but still appear. They don't appear in the source site's site pages library,  and definitely shouldn't be in the news.aspx page. When the link to one of those deleted pages is clicked, I get this:

This site can’t be reached

The webpage at **https://xxxxx.sharepoint.com/sites/xxxx/SitePages/xxxx.aspx** might be temporarily down or it may have moved permanently to a new web address.

Deleted pages should give a 404 error not "this site can't be reached", so something is not working right (though I realize Msft's error messages are notoriously inaccurate). How do I make sure deleted pages don't show up on this page? And why is this happening?

Yes, definitely a bug. The pages were deleted and I had to restore them from the recycle bin and then delete them again. I've reported it via a service request but I realize Msft rarely fixes anything.

    Hi Webbrewers3,

When you say “news.aspx archive page”, may I if this the URL /_layouts/15/news.aspx/?newsSource=2?

When we delete the news post from Page page (/SitePages/Forms/ByAuthor.aspx), it should delete from other location as well and should go to Recycle bin then Second Stage recycle bin and then will delete permanently.

Based on your description, I tested on my end and the page that I deleted from Pages page was removed from news.aspx and the News webpart.

For the test purpose, could you delete some sample page from Pages and check if they are gone from news.aspx as well. This is just to confirm if the issue is with the specific pages or all the sites are showing the same behavior.

Besides, please try re-adding the webpart to check the result.

    Regards,

    Neha
