Cannot scan to email from HP MFP M281cdw since migrating to office365 email

We recently migrated from IMAP to Office365 email platform and can no longer scan to email from the HP MFP device.

I am receiving the error message that the user name and password are incorrect.  I verified the password and even changed the password and am still getting this error message.

I updated firmware and printer drivers and still cannot scan to email.  These are newer printers, and this problem only began when I changed to office365 smtp outgoing server settings.

I’ve tried using different ports and that hasnt worked either.

In order to scan to email, the HP MFP M281cdw requires set-up via IP login to the device and the smtp outgoing server, username and password must be entered.

The scan to email feature was working with my imap server, but is no longer working since migration to office 365.  This appears to be a known issue with office365, but I can't find any clear directions on how to fix the issue for the HP MFP M281cdw.

Are you using HP full feature software direct from HP support site?

Generally you add that email account to MS Outlook using auto setup, and as such there would be no smtp settings shown/needed.

Perhaps you mean that you are using an onmicrosoftDOTcom mail address?

You only use o365smpt settings when you are adding them to an app that has an inbuilt mail send option, eg a third party backup app that sends a confirmation/failure email

    Hi Beer Mule,

<***Don't call the phone number in the first reply, it's from a spammer***>

Based on your description, I’d like to confirm if you are setting up SMTP AUTH client submission to send email from your HP MFP device. If so, I’d like to share with you that:

    1. This feature is not compatible with Microsoft Security Defaults or MFA, if your organization use these settings, there might be problem.
    2. Your mailbox needs to be enabled SMTP AUTH before it could ne used to set up SMTP AUTH client submission.
    3. Your device needs to support TLS 1.2 or above, you could confirm it with your device administrator.
    4. If your device recommends or defaults to port 465, you could not use SMTP AUTH client submission.

For detailed information about how to set up SMTP AUTH client submission, please refer to https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/exchange/mail-flow-best-practices/how-to-set-up-a-multifunction-device-or-application-to-send-email-using-microsoft-365-or-office-365#option-1-recommended-authenticate-your-device-or-application-directly-with-a-microsoft-365-or-office-365-mailbox-and-send-mail-using-smtp-auth-client-submission. Detailed steps about how to troubleshoot this kind of problem, you could view https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/exchange/mail-flow-best-practices/fix-issues-with-printers-scanners-and-lob-applications-that-send-email-using-off#:~:text=A%20common%20reason%20for%20issues%20with%20Microsoft%20365,can%20be%20blocked%20by%20a%20spam%20block%20list.

If I have misunderstanding, please feel free to correct me, and if issue persists, may I collect screenshot of your settings for further analysis? And if you change another Microsoft 365 account to set up the SMTP AUTH client submission, is the outcome different?

    Kind Regards,

    Betty

Seems HP has taken a step backwards, I had no such problems, or requirements with my previous HP printers
