Cannot find format page number option in Page Number tab

I use a school account version of Microsoft 365 (Office) on a HP-19 All in One PC running Windows 10. I write the paper in the Firefox (using latest update)  browser.

Paper requirements for my classes include an unnumbered title page and pagination of the rest of the paper starting with 1 (which is the second page), all in the same file. The problem of course is no matter how I try to edit the footer, it will  only number the title page or begin with 2 on the actual first page of the paper.

The tip box says to follow this path: "insert- page numbers - format page number" in order to make the pagination start with 0

But

When I go to the page number tab, the only options are 1) to choose one of six positions for the page number, and  2) delete page numbers.  There is no "format page number" option. Is this a glitch?

If I need to use a template, how do I get Office to recognize it after I download it?

    Hi Michael,

    Sorry for this inconvenience.

As you mentioned, you wrote the paper in the Firefox browser using Word for the web. And based on my test, this feature “Format page number” is not available in the Word web application.

For your information: Add different page numbers or number formats to different sections

As a workaround, I would suggest you manually number each page using Header or Footer options for each page. Or, you could use this option in the desktop version of Word on Mac or Windows.

And I have sent you a template file that using page numbers starting with "0" via private message. Hope it helps. If it is not to meet your requirement, please feel free to contact me with your needs.

To address your concern, I would recommend you post a new thread via our Word for web UserVoice to make feedback. Since threads here are actively monitored by related teams and many new features have been implemented from our customer's suggestions. Your feedback is highly appreciated as it helps to improve the functionality of the product.

Thanks for your understanding and efforts.

    Best Regards,

    May

If you are using Word in your browser, then you are using the online version of Word. That version has limited capabilities.

If your school allows you to install the full, local version of Office, I suggest that you do so.
