Lost Horizontal scroll bar in a word document

Both display properties are checked, however for some time now, the horizontal bar does not display, as it used to do in a document I am working on.  It shows up in new documents and other documents, but not in this document I have been working on nearly daily for a year.  How can I fix it?

    Hi Wade,

May I know which view you are working in, Print layout or Web etc.?

In Word, the horizontal scroll bar is displayed only when it is needed. If you are working in Print layout and the zoom is more than 200 or the view is set to Web layout or Outline or Draft, you will see the horizontal scroll.

If you are working in Print layout view and you increase the Zoom ratio to the point where part of the document is off the screen, do you see the horizontal scroll (screenshot below for reference)?

Besides, you mentioned “*Both display properties are checked”,*may I know if you mean Show horizontal scroll bar box is checked? To confirm, in Word, click File>Options>Advanced, scroll to the Displaysection, make sure that Show horizontal scroll bar option is ticked.

Also, scroll bars might be set to automatically hide themselves. You can turn this setting off.

    1. Click StartSettings.
    2. Under Windows Settings, scroll down, and then click Ease of Access > Display.
    3. Scroll down, and then set Automatically hide scroll bars in Windows to Off.

    Regards,

    Neha

The document is in Print Layout and displays at 100%. The horizontal scrollbar is checked in the Word document configuration, and has been checked for who knows how long.

As I said in my original post, this issue is only on some documents.  Some show the horizontal scrollbar which  automatically hides.  Yesterday, I turned off the Windows auto-hide feature,  but Word documents which do show the horizontal scroll bar still auto-hide.  It did change Windows behavior. The document I am working in now, never shows the horizontal scroll bar, while the vertical scroll bar is available and auto-hides, even with that Windows feature turned off.  This has been an issue for the last month or two.  It used to be available, but is no longer.

If you change the endnote setting to "Restart each section" and then insert section breaks, you should be fine.

After posting my reply, I tried copying and pasting my whole document into a new empty document.  After that the horizontal scroll bar became available in the new document.

However, my original document is configured to have the Endnotes at the end of each section (Chapter).  The new document reverted back to putting them all at the end of the new document, which is not usable, as the Endnote numbers repeat.  Since there are no sections marked in the new document, setting the Endnotes at the end of each section is not available to check before I copy the text.  So now, I need to figure out a way of getting my converted as configured.
