I'm having difficulty creating a Multilevel list according to a Microsoft support document: Define New Bullets, Numbers, and Multilevel List document, although I have done this before many times. Attempting to copy the steps 1-8 here:
Define a new multilevel list
- Select the text or numbered list you want to change.
- On the Home tab, in the Paragraph group, click the arrow next to Multilevel List, and then click
Define New Multilevel List.a — »
- Expand the Multilevel list dialog box by clicking More in the lower left corner.
- Choose the list level to modify by selecting it in the list. 1 is selected by default.
- Choose where you would like to apply your changes by clicking Whole list. This point forward, or Current paragraph.
- To use an existing style in Word for each level in the list, choose a style under Link level to style.
- Choose the number to show in the gallery. Level 1 is shown by default.
- Give the multilevel list a name in the ListNum field list name. This name will appear wherever you see the Listnum field.
My multilevel list has 9 named paragraph styles linked to the appropriate levels.
I don't know what step 7 does, as it doesn't seem to matter what Level 1 select; left the Level 1 default.
Per step 8, I put a name in the ListNum field list name.

The ListNum field list name does not appear as I expected in the Manage Styles window (without a space, it would be at the end of the built-in lists--or at least it used to)
Nor does the Current List or Lists in Current Documents display any name if I hover over the gallery image (as used to happen)

I intend to create more multilevel lists in this document. I want to be able to name these lists to work for our group. And to be able to delete it, if needed. Per another post, I need to be able to find the name in Manage Styles to be able to do that.
How do I accomplish what I need? Thank you
