I'm having difficulty creating a Multilevel list according to a Microsoft support document: Define New Bullets, Numbers, and Multilevel List document, although I have done this before many times. Attempting to copy the steps 1-8 here:

Define a new multilevel list

  1. Select the text or numbered list you want to change.
  2. On the Home tab, in the Paragraph group, click the arrow next to Multilevel List, and then click

Define New Multilevel List.a — »

  1. Expand the Multilevel list dialog box by clicking More in the lower left corner.
  2. Choose the list level to modify by selecting it in the list. 1 is selected by default.
  3. Choose where you would like to apply your changes by clicking Whole list. This point forward, or Current paragraph.
  4. To use an existing style in Word for each level in the list, choose a style under Link level to style.
  5. Choose the number to show in the gallery. Level 1 is shown by default.
  6. Give the multilevel list a name in the ListNum field list name. This name will appear wherever you see the Listnum field.

My multilevel list has 9 named paragraph styles linked to the appropriate levels.

I don't know what step 7 does, as it doesn't seem to matter what Level 1 select; left the Level 1 default.

Per step 8, I put a name in the ListNum field list name.

The ListNum field list name does not appear as I expected in the Manage Styles window (without a space, it would be at the end of the built-in lists--or at least it used to)

Nor does the Current List or Lists in Current Documents display any name if I hover over the gallery image (as used to happen)

I intend to create more multilevel lists in this document. I want to be able to name these lists to work for our group. And to be able to delete it, if needed. Per another post, I need to be able to find the name in Manage Styles to be able to do that.

How do I accomplish what I need? Thank you

I haven't used the Numbering or Bullets from the ribbon for years. I've used many multilevel lists for years that I created over time. However, they are no longer working. Word has corrupted my existing templates with the styles and lists so they no longer function properly. So I am trying to start from scratch to recreate the lists and styles in a new template. Yet I keep getting these WEIRD things, like -22.75 indentations showing up.

Can you save a sample document with the problem on DropBox or OneDrive and post a view link here?

When you follow this method you do not apply numbering in your document using the numbering buttons; you apply the related style to the paragraph.
