Data table under Word chart

I cannot add a data table to a Word chart. The option to add the data table element is greyed out and I cannot insert the table into the document although I can see and edit the data in the pop-up window. I cannot make the table a part of the Word document appearing under the chart.

Apparently, the availability of a Data Table depends upon the Chart Type and is only available for the following chart types:

    Column

    Line

    Bar

    Area

    Stock

    Surface

    Combo

How do I check on whether the Word document that I just created is in some sort of protected mode? This shows the greyed out option for data tables.

Is the document in compatibility mode, or in some other way has a restriction applied to it.

Here, there is no problem accessing the Data Tables facility

That's a workaround solution for a problem that should not be there - for years, I have been able to opt for a chart element - data table - and now I cannot. Your solution, for example, does not update the table data when it is changed. That is hardly satisfactory for a chart showing changing data.

But thanks for a partial solution.

When the pop-up window is visible, select the data and press CTRL+c

and then move the selection below the chart and press CTRL+v
