Get rid of comments pop-up

Here is my issue:

On Microsoft Word, comments appear in a panel to the right of the document. When there are too many comments to fit on a single page, the comments are automatically shortened into previews, and by clicking on an arrow you can expand them to show the full comment within the panel.

However, for some reason, I have suddenly encountered a problem with this. Instead of the comments expanding when I click the arrow, a pop-up with the comment appears directly above my document. The comments themselves do not expand like they used to. This has made editing both the document and the comments extremely difficult for me.

I don't know why this issue suddenly occurred or how to fix it. I want to eliminate the automatic pop-ups altogether, and revert to having the comments simply expand within the comment panel.

    Hi,

Thanks for using Microsoft products and posting in the community, I'm glad to offer help.

According to your description, I tested with different versions of Word and I got the following results:

    1.    In Current Channel, version 2012, I can reproduce the same situation, clicking the arrow will open a  pop-up window.

    2.    In Current Channel, version 2011, it works as you are used to, and there will be no popups when clicking the arrow.

Reference: Release notes for Current Channel

PS: you can go to Files> Account> Product Information>About Wordto check your version.

Since you said the problem "suddenly" appeared, the cause may be that Word has been automatically updated to version 2012 recently. If that is the case, you can send feedback to Office to let the relevant team know that you do not like this change: How do I give feedback on Microsoft Office?

Andif you want to go back to the olderversion(which we do not recommend it), you can use the Office Deployment Toolto install specific version of Office, for more details, you can refer to Overview of the Office Deployment Tool, or posting a new thread.

Hope the above information can be helpful, and please feel free to let me know if you have any concerns.

    Best Regards,

    Arck

I don't have occasion to use comments very much, but I do see what you mean.  However, if you click on the title bar of that dialog, you can drag it into a position where it is not obscuring the text in the document that you want to be able to see.
