The owner of the project cannot open project in Read/write mode in Project online desktop app. The other members can open and edit the project in the app. It is just the owner who has this issue. The project opens only in read mode. We have tried checking out, but it gives an error. In the past, the owner created a new project and deleted the old one, the new did work and now the problem appeared again, we don’t want go through the trouble of creating the new project again and again, there should be solution to this problem. Does anyone had this issue and could share the solution?

Hi DarkkNights2020,

In your post, you mentioned the user (owner) cannot check out the project, may I know if the user is getting any error? If so, please provide us with the screenshot.

To open projects from Project Web App for editing in Project online desktop client, click Projects on the Quick Launch, and then click once in a project row to select it. On the Projects tab, in the Project group, click Open, and then click In Microsoft Project for Editing.

Besides, as the issue is with desktop app, in this scenario, please try removing cached credentials.

  1. If you are signed into Office apps, sign out and close all the Office applications opened on your system. To sign out, open any Office application, let’s say Project, click File>Account>Sign out and the quit all Office apps.
  2. Open Control Panel>User Account>Credentials Manager>Windows Credentials.
  3. Under Generic Credentials, look for any entries containing MicrosoftOffice16 and MicrosoftOffice15 credentials and Remove all.

After deleting the cached password, open Project and click File>Account>Sign in and enter your log in credentials and try opening the project again, see if it works now.

If the issue persists, please provide the following information:

  1. Provide the screenshot of Project Product Information. To get this screenshot, open Project app on the affected system, click File>Account, capture the screenshot of all the information mentioned under Product Information.
  2. Does this happen with every other project or is it happening with specific one?
  3. Is this project created in older version of Project client and then moved to PWA?

Let me know the status. Have a nice day and stay safe😊

Regards,

Neha
