Customized ribbon Commands disappear

Recently I have had a problem with the command ribbon on Office 365 Word. I will add the tools that I most use to this ribbon and it will be okay for a few days. But after a few days, all the commands that I add to the ribbon suddenly disappear. By that I mean that it returns to its default tools on the command ribbon. This is frustrating because I have to look for the commands again and add them individually. Is there something wrong with Word 365? Also, two days ago I tried to open the programs in 365 and got a message that it was updating. However, it never completed updating and I ended up having to to a repair to get the program to work in any program. I don't think that it ever updated. Any suggestions?

Thanks again for your help. This really is a learning experience for me. I did read your paper and I have already followed those steps when I have added the quick commands in the past. I am not in a Corporate setting and this is in my home network where I have my home office. this issue was not a problem for a bit more than a year and only started in the past couple of months.

Are you on a corporate network? This is an important question; this is the third time I've asked you.

To clarify. You are adding commands to the QAT - the Quick Access Toolbar, not to the Ribbon.

Have you read my page on Modifying the Quick Access Toolbar (QAT) in Microsoft Word?

I do not know that I or anyone here can tell you the "why?" I am trying to help you, at least, with the "how?" My page gives instructions on how to make changes that will not disappear on you because they are not stored in the Word.officeUI file.

If you are on a corporate network, your IT department may be the "why."

Thanks for your help. It is truly appreciated. I think the may be the easiest way to explain what I am dealing with.

This is a screenshot of the ribbon that I took yesterday after I read your email. It shows the quick commands that I added to the ribbon while working on a document.

This is a screenshot of the document after the ribbon quick commands disappear and return to the default setting.

I will admit that I am not the most knowledgeable person when it comes to Word 365, I would simply like to know why it suddenly started to change my settings back to default after it has worked without issues for the past year.

I still do not understand you. I am sorry.

QAT or Ribbon tab? These are different.

Are you on a corporate network?

If you mean the QAT, where are you saving your modifications? If you do not know, it is likely the file Word.officeUI. If so, consider making a backup of that file after you change things.

My page Modifying the Quick Access Toolbar (QAT) in Microsoft Word shows you how to make changes that are resistant to disappearing.

    Hi Danny,

Are you adding commands to the Ribbon Tabs or to the Quick Access Toolbar? I can see either of these being called the command ribbon.

Changes to either of these are stored in the file Word.OfficeUI by default. Changes to the QAT can easily be stored elsewhere. Storing changes to the Ribbon Tabs elsewhere requires modifying the XML coding of a file. (See Customize the Ribbon (It doesn't take rocket science) by Greg Maxey.)

I keep virtually all changes to my QAT in other files.
