The PDF file I want open has a Word logo beside it, so when I open it using Office 2007, a file conversion window opens and shows codes instead of the PDF.

It does if you want to open it with Word 2007. Otherwise re-associate it with Adobe Reader or your browser. i.e. right click, then Open With and choose Adobe Reader. Check the box to always open with that application.
Word 2007, with an add-in supplied in a service pack after its first release, can create PDF files, as can subsequent versions natively, but the first version to be able to open and edit PDFs was Word 2013.
Word 2007 can't open PDF files. The ability to save as PDF was introduced before basic PDF editing.
So it is possible to save a document as a PDF file but can't open a PDF file.
You can't open the PDF in Word 2007; that is correct. You can open the PDF if you install Adobe Reader.
Support for Office 2007 ended October 2017 and for 2010 Oct 2020, and at those times the backup install was removed from MS Site, and updates of any type ceased.
You could try an Office repair/reinstall but I would hold out too much hope
