Hi,

I like how documentations is being organized.

When I explore any documentation here at docs.microsoft.com I can see a tree to the left with all topics.

Like this example https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-query/

And at the bottom there are a .pdf file that contains everything to download it for offline usage.

Where can I found such a thing for Microsoft Excel?

Thanks

Hi, I'm Elise, an independent advisor and I'd be happy to help with your issue.

I don’t believe there is any official documentation from Microsoft for Excel that is available in PDF format. The best I can source if the online documentation which is available here:

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/excel

Please let me know if you need any further assistance.

    Kind Regards,

    Elise

Yes, MS has produced a few PDF's at the docs.microsoft.com site, but that is the exception rather than the rule. MS stopped producing "full" documentation for Office products, back in the late 1990's. The "newest" paper documentation from MS I have is from 1994 for Word 6.0 for Windows.  "Microsoft Press" has published Office books more recently, but they are often by independent authors.

Do you have specific needs or areas you want to learn?  Let us know, I have lots more links to specific topics, including books.

In general, there are a couple of categories of "Office books":

    • "For Dummies" or equivalent, don't bother, you can find the same material online
    • Office compilations: introductory coverage on core Office applications, $50-100, slightly better than for dummies
    • Application specific, $50-100

    .

You will have to buy books produced by someone other than MS.  If you are a paperbook kind of person (I am), then buy a paper book. But there are also a lot of paid and free ebooks and other free online resources available.  Learning how to do effective web searches will take you a long way to answering your questions and finding free ebooks.

Hint: if you find a website that offers free downloads of printed books in ebook form (without a registration!), go through the whole site and download anything you ever think you will want. I've learned the hard way that these sites tend to be short term.

Here are some links to some books and recommendations:

Stephan emailed me recently, and asked what books I’d recommend for an advanced beginner and for an intermediate user. On the Contextures website, I've got a long list of Excel books. They range from books for absolute beginners, to specialized books on statistics and financial modeling.

I do unfortunately agree, but it appears to be the prevailing trend amongst many app developers.

The only other suggestion I can give is to source out a ebook from a third party, I believe there are quite a few free ones on the internet that you could use.

    Kind Regards,
    Elise

    Thanks for your reply.

But this is neither organized nor comprehensive my friend.

Why Microsoft no longer provide on/off line help file for the software the way it used to be :(
