MS Word newsletter templates

Hi,

I'm new to using MS Word templates but I need to create a simple newsletter for the residential community I live within. I thought it would be a straightforward task, enjoyable even if I modified an existing template.

How wrong was this assumption! Are there any MS tutorials available within the package that I can use to guide my efforts. I've looked for them but cannot find any. Could a member of the Community direct my search please?

Which particular template are you trying to use? Most of these templates are created by designers not really very familiar with Word and tend to use a lot of text boxes. They make poor (or strange) use of headers and footers and are generally more "fancy" than functional. Even experienced Word users can find them baffling, but if you're not a Word expert, you can be excused for being at sea!

I don't find the Realtor newsletter in Word 2013, but searching in the Microsoft Template Gallery, I found Realtor newsletter (office.com). Is this the one you were trying to use? I opened it in Word Online, and it's hard to tell from there exactly how it's formatted, though it does seem to use columns, wrapped graphics, text boxes, etc. It looks pretty glitzy, and I suspect it would be frustrating if you were trying to insert large blocks of text. You might do better to start with a blank document, format it for columns as needed, and add graphics where required. For help with columns, see http://wordfaqs.ssbarnhill.com/UsingColumns.htm.

The reference to Word 2013 is that that is the latest version I have installed, and that template was not available from the New dialog in that version. When I found it online, I didn't download it and try to use it--just looked at it in the browser--but I could tell that, though glitzy, it would be difficult for a novice to deal with. I think you'll be more satisfied with something you create yourself to your exact needs, and you can add more advanced elements as you become more comfortable with them. Keep in mind that the content is the important thing, not the presentation!

Apologies for not thanking you sooner for your reply – other things had to be dealt with before I could reply to you.

You correctly located the Realtor template I tried to modify, not sure about your Word 2013 reference. Anyway, no matter; I can see from your looking at it that it’s probably way too advanced for me to try to modify. Further, I believe now that preparing my own format from scratch is the best approach. Thank you for sharing with me the link to your website – I hope you will allow me to make a print of your wordfaqs document so that I can read it offline.

If anything else comes to mind that you think might be of use to me, please contact me.

    Hello Suzanne,

Thank you for picking-up my request for help.

I picked a simple Newsletter template of four pages with three columns. However, I worked with this for several hours and decided it was too complicated and tried another, that seemed of simpler appearance.

The second template was called Realtor. However when I tried to replace the main image with one of our development I could not replace the image in its position on the document nor could I resize it to match the original image.

Then I tried to create a template in Word but ran into difficulties with placing images over columns, removing outlines from text boxes and so on despite reverting to the Internet for guidance.

Interspersed with each attempt, I sought help from the internet, including searching for tutorials.

So, I wonder whether my goal of creating a simple newsletter of text and image/pictures is really achievable? Can you suggest a tutorial that I could use to help me achieve my goal, please?
