I have Office 365 and I am trying to insert a pdf file in a Word document.  I have selected insert--->object>-----from file and I have it checked to display as an icon and it will not do it.  It keeps inserting the whole file.  Can you please let me know what is wrong?

You can only insert a PDF as an object in the windows version. Object insertion uses OLE, a Windows-only technology. Microsoft did a mini-port of it to Office for Mac, but it only supports insertion of Excel and Word objects in Excel, Word and PowerPoint.

You can insert a PDF as a picture in Word for Mac, which you can't do in the Windows version. You'll only get one page at a time, so you may have to use Preview to split the PDF to separate pages before placing in Word.

Further to John's reply: It may seem to be a bit deceptive but the Display as Icon check box pertains only to the Object types listed in the box on that pane.

The check will remain in effect if From File is used only if the selected file is one of those types. Selecting any other file type nullifies the Icon option & for anything other than an image file type will result in an error message. PDF is a hybrid file type which is treated as an image file.
