Shift cells down

Hello,

I'd like to shift down the data in some of the columns on my worksheet. When I try to do this by highlighting the cells that I want to move by inserting some blank cells (In this instance J100 - Z100) and selecting 'Insert - Insert cells' I get the error below. Which is disappointing because moving cells in a table is exactly what I want to do.

Any help would be much appreciated.

    Hi Waqas,

Yes, I could select the data and manually drag it down but there are multiple cells which need lining up so that would be very time-consuming.

This screenshot shows the result when I select the whole row - The 'Table Rows Above' option is greyed out.

When I select a single cell, I'm able to select 'Table Rows Above', as in the screenshot below...

However, this is the result - It only inserts blank cells in the first 2 columns. The data from the 3rd column onwards is copied in from elsewhere so it doesn't like that (and that appears to be an older version of Excel where I am able to do what I'm wanting, shown in the final 3 screenshots below)

    In 'older' spreadsheet:

    2.

    3.

    Thanks,

    Liam

    Hi Liam Kalinowski,

I apologize for all the trouble it has caused and sorry about your time.

As per your description, I just tested from my side I can shift cells down via select the rand of cell>right click and select insert>shift cell down and its works as expected. See image below for your reference:

    Result:

Since you mentioned after you select rang of cell you will get error message, I suggest you can try another easy way and see the result.

1.Highlight the section of the table/rang of cell whose content we want to shift down by dragging the cursor across all the cells we want to shift down.

    1. We will place the cursor on the edge of the top line that we have highlighted, until the shape of the cursor changes to a crucifix with arrowheads on the four angles. Once the cursor has changed to the crucifix shape, we will left-click and drag down the entire cells to our desired position.

Meanwhile, if I the issue still persists, to let us help you could you please tell us your Excel version? Open Excel > File > Account > Production Information and share a screenshot of it.  (Please mask your private information.)

I appreciate your patience and understanding.

    Best Regards

    Waqas Muhammad

    Hi Liam Kalinowski,

We appreciate that you spent your precious time doing those tests and shared the test results with us. I do understand the inconvenience it has made and apologize for it. And we’re still glad to help you.

I cannot meet the same behavior you mentioned in screenshot above, in my side it works as like you mentioned the way in ‘older'spreadsheet:” please tell us your Excel version. Open Excel > File > Account > Production Information and share a screenshot of it.  (Please mask your private information.) for test purpose and I will test on that version.

Meanwhile, please confirm does issue happen to specific worksheet? or what happen if you create new Excel sheet for test purpose.

I appreciate your patience and understanding.

    Best Regards

    Waqas Muhammad

You have to select the left cell only, not a range of cells

That would insert an entire new row. In previous Excels, you were able to select a range.

I manage to do it yesterday, with a different sheet that was in an older Excel format, the same way as i described above. I didn't even need to go to the ribbon for the Insert option - it was available on the right click.
