How to fix my Table of Contents in MS Word?

Hi all,

I have a document that has a table of contents that I am working on. The table was created as an outline and as I filled information in I found that some of the paragraph text is now in the table of contents sections. How can I change/fix this?

Either you have inadvertently formatted part of the text in a heading style, or (which is more likely) some text paragraphs have acquired "Outline level" formatting. The quickest fix is the following: Press Alt+F9 (or Alt+Fn+F9 on some keyboards) to reveal field codes. Remove the \u switch from the TOC field if it is present. Update the TOC. Press Alt+F9 again to hide field codes.

    1. In your TOC, Ctrl+Click on the text that should not be there. That should take you to the text in your document.
    2. Make sure that display of non-printing formatting characters is turned on so you can see the paragraph marks.
    3. Select the entire paragraph including the paragraph mark at the end.
    4. Apply your body style (likely Normal or Body Text).
    5. Use Alt+Left Arrow key to return to the TOC and pick the next errant text, repeat as necessary.
    6. Update your TOC (entire table, not just page numbers) with the F9 key.

If that does not do what you need, refer to the links that Rohn gave. Here are more:

I'm guessing / assuming you are using heading styles to create your outline and TOC

    .

The body text is probably using a heading style. Change it to your default body text, ie "normal", <CTL><N> shortcut, and rebuild the whole TOC.
