How can I customize a specific table of contents in one section of a large document with different sections without changing the tables of contents in other sections?

Hi Charles, there is only one set of TOC styles, but you can assign TOC 1, 2 and 3 to one TOC, TOC 4, 5 and 6 to another and TOC 6, 7 and 8 to a third. Then you link each TOC to a different set of heading styles. It works.

Thank you very much. I did manage to create a TOC that is close enough to what I need. Thank you for your effort.

    You cannot.

There is only one set of TOC styles in a document. If you can tell me what it is you want different in the special TOC, I or someone else may be able to help you do that, without changing any others. For instance, you can change some things in a TOC by applying direct formatting to the source material. (That is discussed in Suzanne's article.)

Thank you very much. This seems to be a bit tricky. It is possible to create multiple TOC's in a single document. There is tutorials on that in the net. That works. To do so you have to prepare your document using the headings. The result may not turn out exactly as you wished. The usual means to modify the format  of a TOC cannot be used, because doing so affects all TOC's in the document. I have not figured out how to apply the format or style of a TOC which I like - maybe even from another document - or the same document - to a specific TOC.

    Hello Karl,

My name is Charles Kenyon and I am an Independent Advisor in this forum . This forum is a user-to-user support forum. I am a fellow user with decades of experience using Microsoft Word. I have written extensively on using Word and have help articles on the Microsoft site.

There is limited ability to do so. What specific differences do you want for this Table of Contents? A Table of Contents (TOC) is a field inserted with switches to identify which items in the text should be displayed. By default it displays things that are in Heading Styles. The way the TOC, itself, is displayed is controlled by the TOC styles, with certain direct formatting in the text coming into the TOC.

Here is a link that may help you figure things out.

Even though this is written for a Windows version, the principles and the TOC field and styles are the same and act the same.

    I hope this information helps.
