For a few days when I select the highlighter in word 2007 it doesn't always stay selected, but as soon as I highlight a sentence it deselects itself. Before, however, when I selected the highlighter it remained selected until I deselected it and it was very convenient. How can I go back to the previous settings? Thank you!

How strange. Here (Office 2019, version 2102), the highlighter remains active so that I can highlight more text ranges if I wish. See screen shot below.
However, if I choose to edit part of the text, I will lose the active highlighter and I will have to select Home > Text Highlight Color again.
At the moment when you click the Text Highlight Color icon, make sure that nothing is selected in the document. The Highlighter should then stay "active."
This is exactly how it worked until a week ago, but not anymore and I don't know what I may have done. I searched in the Word settings if there was the option to choose to keep the highlighter selected or not, since in other programs like Adobe there is, but I could not find anything.
Update: I noticed that I just need to click the mouse to make the highlighter deselect
