Office Shared Features on Office 365

I'm using Office 365 with a school account. Now everytime when I open Word it shows an error "The function you are attempting to run contains macros or content that requires macro language support. When this software was installed, you or your administrator chose not to install support for macros or controls." After clicking "Ok" three times, it shows "The document contains macros. Macro language support for this application is disabled. Features requiring VBA are not available. Would you like to open this document read-only?" Then it shows "Word cannot open this document template (C:\Users...\EndNote Cwyw.dotm)".

I guess it's because of the macro issues with EndNote. Because when I disable the EndNote add-in there is no problem anymore.

I tried every method I found on Google and it didn't work. Looks like I have a similar issue with this thread:

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/msoffice/forum/all/office-shared-features-on-2019-office-pro-plus/30a398f2-06d2-4398-a988-ce2939128f90?rtAction=1611764015875

I have a Click-to-Run installation. And I need to change the setting in Office Shared Features to make Visual Basic for Applications to run on the current computer. But I cannot find the shared features anywhere. Modifing the installation using Programs and Features > Change only shows a repair screen. And a full repair (as well as the installation) will fail at last saying that "we're sorry we ran into a problem while installing and couldn't finish everything..." There is no error code and I don't know what happened. I guess it's because of the VBA features? There is no error message for Excel and Powerpoint.

I'm struggling on this for an entire day. I'm not sure if it's related to the uninstallation of Microsoft C++ distribution 2003/2005 etc which I did a few days ago. Any help or advice on how to do next is highly appreciated!

I had this problem - plagued me trying to open students work to assess submitted through Teams (requiring the full features of Word).

All the option of running change apps etc via settings only applies to Office 2007 and earlier.

I changed word to run as admin - this worked from the start menu, but also had to change the properties of Winword.exe to run as admin. So far this seems to work.

You may be able to enable the use of VBA by going to File>Options>Trust Center>Trust Center Settings>Macro Settings and select the "Disable all macros with notification" radio button.

However, if those settings are not enabled and you cannot change them, you will need to talk to your IT people and get them to change the Macro Security Level.

I assume that the last part of this path

    (C:\Users...\EndNote Cwyw.dotm)

    is

    \AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Word\STARTUP

and that folder will need to be set as a Trusted Location under File>Options>Trust Center>Trust Center Settings>Trust Locations (which it would normally be by default).

    Hi Doug,

The "Disable all macros with notification" radio button has already been chosen (by default).

The Cwyw.dotm file is under the "\ApData\Local\Temp\EndNote\Templates.XXXXX" folder. And this folder is generated temporarily every time I open Word. And it cannot be added to the trusted location of Word due to security reasons as it says.

Is it related to Microsoft C++ redistributable? I deleted some older packages some days ago by mistake. I'm not sure whether it has something to do with this.

    Thank you.

    Best regards,

    Alpin

    Hi Arck,

    Thanks for your prompt reply.

I tried this to completely uninstall office 365 and all previous versions and reinstall Office 365. It got stuck at the end of the installation and finally reported an error. Please see the attached screenshot.

    Best regards,

    Alpin
