Word template with different first and second pages for letterhead

I created letterhead where the first page and the 2nd + pages are different. What I have to do every time is cut and paste the document contents so that when I add too much content to the first page, it pushes to the next page and transfers the 2nd page as the first page design. Hope that makes sense.

I recently received a Word template for a client's letterhead and it's so simple. You can start with a blank page - just one page and then when you add content that is more than the first page, the 2nd page appears with a different header/footer than the first. It does this with ease and no work on the user's part.

How can this be done?

To explain:

Start with blank template > add as much content as I want and the template will automatically keep the first page and the 2nd + pages different.

Thank you in advance!

The Letterhead detail needs to be inserted into the First Page Header of the document and any content for the second and subsequent pages needs to be inserted into the Primary Header

You should set up a template with those features and then use that template as the basis for creating new documents.

Start with a blank document and then right click in the top margin and then on Edit Header. Then set up the content for the Primary Header. After doing that, check on the Different First Page box in the Options section of the Header & Footer tab of the ribbon and set up the header content for the first page. Then close the Header and Footer and save the document as a template (.dotx)

Then, when you need to create a document with those features, use File>New and select that template.

Yay, thank you! This did it. I read the first article. Didn't have to check the 2nd one yet.

Maybe this is what the first MVP person was trying to tell me too.

Thank you all again! So helpful.

Glad to have helped. Do read the second one, too. You'll get good tips.

This is what Doug was telling you. These pages developed from trying to explain the concepts again and again. It is more information than fits here well.

One thing....how do I get a different header height on first page versus 2nd + pages? If I change it on the 2nd page, it changes the header from top on the first page even though it's set to "different first page"

You put the content in the headers that you want. Leave the setting for the header space alone.

That setting is really for the minimum space.

If you put in more, the header will adjust to hold the content and the body text will move down.
