One Drive "The name contains characters that aren't allowed"

Dear Microsoft Community,

One of our users is facing an issue with the OneDrive app on Mac. She is able to sync the "XYZ" library from SharePoint online but when she tries to create a  folder inside this library, OneDrive says "The name contains characters that aren't allowed. Please rename the item so we can sync it". Even though there is no special character in the folder name.

Checking the library on SharePoint online, I can see that the folder has been synced but with the "untitled folder" name.

Things I have done:

1- Deleted the OneDrive app completely using app remover to remove all remaining files. Installed the updated version from the Microsoft website.

2- Tried to sync another folder from a different SharePoint site. Surprisingly, she was able to create a folder inside it with the original name.

3- She is able to use her private OneDrive folder and she can create a folder, upload, and remove folders.

Please help if you have faced the same issue.

Thanks a lot,

Best

    Hi chris39647,

    Thank you for the update.

Since you mentioned that only the user has the problem for this specific library, may I know that whether the user could create folders in this library from SharePoint Online?

If he could create from SharePoint Online, you can let the user try to reset OneDrive. Resetting OneDrive can resets all OneDrive settings. After resetting successfully, you can try to setup it again to see the result.

    Best regards,

    Jazlyn

    Hi Jazlyn,

    Thank you for your response.

The folder does not have any of those restricted characters and I tried to create the folder with the "test" name as well and it didn't work.

The "untitled folder" appears in the SharePoint library when I create the "test folder in the OneDrive app.

Regarding your suggestion with the support tool to rename the invalid characters, there is no invalid character in the folder. Moreover, the user can create a folder with the same name in her private OneDrive storage and other SharePoint libraries.

Here is the OneDrive client version: 21.052.0314.0001 (Standalone)

Other users have not faced this issue and I synced the same SharePoint library with the OneDrive app for Windows and it worked properly.
