Thank you! Wow, what an unhelpful software update...

Today, I think I was updated to a different Word version. In it, I can no longer get my comments to appear in the markup area. Instead, they appear farther to the right (off the page). This is aggravating because I now have a minimum of three columns going at once-- the document itself, the markup area, and the comments section. So, the text of my document now gets crowded with multiple review spaces. Is there a way to revert back to how things were, where comments and markup appeared in the same column?

The only way to see comments in the old way is to make use of the print preview (File > Print) or by creating an actual printout, to paper or PDF.
I recommend that you post feedback to Microsoft via File > Feedback in Word.
Hi Kevin Editor,
I go through the post carefully, and I am really sorry for the inconvenience the changes takes. It is a recent update on the comments feature, for more information, please check the link: Using modern comments in Word - Word (microsoft.com)
We may not revert back to previous experience unless we revert back Office version. However, you may change how the comments are displayed. Please try show comments in list so that you may move the comments pane and put it in location you like in the document.
Hope these can help.
Best Regards,
Clark
