Problem: When typing in English and using arrow keys, cursor moves the wrong way

When typing in English and using arrow keys, cursor moves the wrong way. i.e - When I click the right arrow key the cursor moves left and vice versa.

I'm using both English and Hebrew (which is written right to left), but my Windows and Office are configured to English.

I tried performing an Online Repain, which seemed to reinstall Office, but it didn't help.

Also didn't find any solutions online.

My first thought was this was a language issue. It was re-inforced when I saw you were using Hebrew and English.

Add the 'Reveal formatting' button to the QAT.

Turn on the Reveal Formatting Pane (click on the button)

Make note of what is revealed when the arrows are working right (ie screen capture the pane)

Then compare the setting when the arrows are working wrong.

My guess is that even though the text is "english" you may see the underlying language displayed is Hebrew ... (?)

The "(complex)" next to Hebrew indicates it is a right to left script.

    .

Sorry, that is as far as I can go.

    .

At the bottom of this page is a languages option. Click on it and pick the hebrew script. Maybe someone in the Hebrew forum can more quickly answer your question.

This is how the 'reveal formatting' looks in both cases (English and Hebrew text).

    Does it make sense?

BTW, forgot to mention - when I change the prefered proofing language to 'English' in the settings, the arrow keys work well in English but backwords in Hebrew.

    Hi roeyk,

I go through your post carefully and as per your description, it seems typing cursor is moving in the opposite direction when you press keyboard arrow keys in Word document.

I don’t think issue seem to be with the language. The sentences might have been right aligned due to which the cursor would be moving from the opposite direction.

Try to Highlight certain area or click on sentences in the document which has the issue, use the short cut key control + R and check the result.

The first thing you'll want to do is to open the document on a different system to see if the problem is evident there, as well. If it is, then you know that the problem is with the document itself. If it is not, then the problem is with the original system.

If this behavior is evident in only a single document, then there are only a limited number of reasons as to why it could be happening. The first thing to check is whether there are any macros associated with the document. It could be that the macros redefine the behavior of the arrow keys. If that is the case, then you can delete or edit the macros to make the behavior change.

The other possible cause is that the document is corrupted in some manner. Corrupt documents can display all sorts of strange behaviors, including keyboard quirks. If you suspect this is the case, try to create a new Word document and check the behavior.

Additionally, I suggest you can also give a shot with following methods and see the results.

    1. Make sure you’ve updated Office to the latest version that some issues can be resolved with such method.
    2. Try open your Word insafe mode to exclude the issue is related to some third-party add-ins. Then check the result.
    3. In the paragraph section under the Home tab check the Right-to-Left text direction symbol. There are two of these: Left-to-Right and Right-to-Left.

Meanwhile, as a temporary work around, you could work on your documents withWord Online.

To help us narrow down the issue, please confirm us with the following information:

    1. What’s your Word version? Open Word > File > Account > Production Information and share a screenshot of it.  (Please mask your private information.)
    2. When using a non-Office application, do you also encounter this problem?
    3. Does the issue happens on all files or a specific one?
    4. Whether other applications also get the same problem? Such as PowerPoint or Excel and etc.

I appreciate your patience and understanding.

    Best Regards

    Waqas Muhammad
