How to customize the page numbers in Table of Contents

My document has a section that contains contract documents that are paginated as CD1, CD2, etc. It has another section that contains design specifications that are paginated DS1, DS2, etc. I know how to create a TOC with headings but would like rather than displaying a simple page number that the TOC pages would include the CD or DS prefix.

Also, for whatever reason, I am not seeing customize TOC in References. I see AutoTable1, AutoTable2, and Manual (Word 7).

Also, for whatever reason, I am not seeing customize TOC in References. I see AutoTable1, AutoTable2, and Manual (Word 7).

Word 2007 and 2010 do not contain the "Custom Table of Contents" in the menu but rather "Insert Table of Contents..."

The screenshot above is from my Generating a Table of Contents and has the Custom Table of Contents... line inserted.

You can also add it using the Insert > Quick Parts > Fields and choosing Table of Contents.

The TOC will always and only display the result of the PAGE field for a given entry. The only way to get the PAGE field to include text is to use the "Include chapter number" feature, where the "chapter number" must be the auto number of a paragraph in one of Word's built-in heading styles. This number can be a letter, but getting a list to use CD and DS for numbering is virtually impossible.

There is therefore no built-in way to achieve what you're asking for. Your only recourse may be to manually edit the TOC after editing is complete, then lock or unlink it to prevent further updates.
