Apply character style as you type

Suppose I'm using a paragraph style and want to apply a character style to part of the text. I know I can do that by selecting the text and applying the character style to it, but sometimes I want to apply the character style to new text that I am typing.

For example,

This is the paragraph style and this is the character style and this is the paragraph style again.

I can use <c>I to turn italics on and <c>I again to turn italics off as I type, but how can I do that with a character style? I can apply the style, but I can't stop it.

You can assign a keyboard shortcut to a character style, as I'm sure you already know. Choose the "Styles" category at File > Options > Customize Ribbon > Customize, locate the style you want, and assign the shortcut.

During typing, to "turn off" the character style, you can press Ctrl+SpaceBar, which runs the ResetChar built-in command (as Hans has already suggested).

Press Ctrl+spacebar when you want to stop using the character style. You'll revert to the 'pure' paragraph style from that point on.
