Microsoft Word Online: can't change page # font

I'm struggling to change the font of page numbers for some reason. I have to use MLA format for school so it needs to be Times New Roman. It allows me to change my last name in the header to TNR but the page number (<#>) stubbornly remains in Calibri.

I've tried switching to a different browser but that didn't help. Does anyone know if there's a way to change the page # font?

Thank you!

PS: Using a Mac, btw.

Thank you for the reply. That's precisely what I'm having trouble with. I add the page number, select it, and re-format it to Times New Roman. I have tried to re-format using both the Home tab and the pop-up formatting tab. It shows the formatting as Times New Roman but when I save the file, it's still in Calibri. I've tested it with both Word and PDF formats. I even sent it to my boyfriend to open on his computer (he has Microsoft Word while I only have the Mac program Pages) and he said the page # shows up as Calibri.

I'm mystified. I've tried a different browser and putting down my Brave shields but that hasn't helped. It consistently shows the page number as being in Times New Roman but downloads it as Calibri. Any idea why?

    Hi Stefan,

As you suggested, there must be some thing more to it. If I launch the web app I can access the Header/Footer & insert The Page Number with no problem. I then can select the Page Number control & reformat it in any way I choose... those changes appear to have been applied.

However, I then have the same experience as the OP: When I return to something other than Editing Mode to view the Page Number the formatting I applied is not in effect. Further, the formatting is absent if I open the document in the desktop program.

In the online app click the Give Feedback to Microsoft tool at the right end of the Status Bar. Include a reference to this thread.

I do not know that WORD online can do this. In part it depends on how the page numbers are created. There is a page number character style that is usually (but not always) applied to page numbers. This is not one of the styles that are available in Word Online.

You could try selecting the page number <#> in the header/footer and applying the Normal style to it.

Otherwise, you will need to edit this in the desktop application. Note that Word Online is a limited-feature version of Word.

Thanks for the follow-up. It appears that this is something particular to browsers in Mac, then. Strange. :-(

Thank you so much for your help however I believe this only applies to numbered lists and not header page numbers. I don't even have the "Define New Number Format" option. Perhaps since I am using the browser program and not the desktop? Not sure. Either way, appreciate the help.
