Licensing Requirements for DLP Policy

I have a tenant with a Business Standard license on it. I want to get access to DLP Policies. But I cannot find the option. According to an article Business Premium has DLp policy options. But also I find an article where it says DLP for Exchange, SharePoint, Onedrive is also included in Business Standard.

The article which says Business Premium/E3/E5 required for DLP:

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/office365/servicedescriptions/microsoft-365-service-descriptions/microsoft-365-tenantlevel-services-licensing-guidance/microsoft-365-security-compliance-licensing-guidance

And the article which shows DLP is available with Business Standard also:

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/office365/servicedescriptions/office-365-platform-service-description/office-365-securitycompliance-center#:~:text=The%20Security%20%26%20Compliance%20Center%20is,Office%20365%20for%20your%20organization.&text=Currently%2C%20many%20of%20the%20compliance,Exchange%20admin%20center%20(EAC).

I am confused about which one to follow as both are Microsoft Documents.

Also one of my friend's org has Business Basic on it, and he informed me that he has DLP POlicy options on his tenant.

Please make me clear what are the license requirements for DLP policies as A Global Administrator of a tenant.

Also, do all the users of the tenant have that license assigned for using the DLP Policy created by GA?

I am attaching Screenshots from the articles I mentioned for your quick reference.

    Hello AdityaEM,

    Thanks for your reply.

For Microsoft 365 Business Standard and Business Premium to use DLP, we have to purchase Office 365 data loss prevention add-on  (add to Exchange Online Plan 1), as footer 7 in Security & Compliance Center availability for business and enterprise plans states.

Hope this is clear for you. Please feel free to let us know if you have any questions about this:)

    Best regards,

As I have a Business Standard Plan and I can not see the DLP Policy option, what should I do to have access to Create DLP policies? Should I buy an office 365 data loss prevention standalone plan for the tenant or should I upgrade Business Standard to Business Premium?

    What suggestions are there?

    Thanks,

    AdityaEM

    Hello AdityaEM,

Thank you for posting in Microsoft community.

After doing some research, I might have found why it is a little confusing here. According to Office 365 plan options - Service Descriptions and this article, Microsoft 365 Business plans (Business Basic, Business Standard and Business Premium) contains Exchange Online Plan 1 license. While according to Data loss prevention, in order to make use of DLP features, we must have at least one mailbox with an Exchange Online Plan 2 license configured. So in order to use the whole set of DLP features, it is recommended to use E3 license and above. While the service itself is available according to Overview of Microsoft 365 Business Premium and my observations on a Business Premium tenant as below: (this license alone is not included in E3, which might be the cause of the difference)

For these three subscriptions (Business Basic, Business Standard and Business Premium), only Business Standard & Business Premium (Marked “Yes” in Security & Compliance Center - Service Descriptions) could use DLP with an add-on license.

For Microsoft 365 Business Standard and Business Premium to use DLP, we have to purchase Office 365 data loss prevention add-on  (add to Exchange Online Plan 1), as footer 7 in Security & Compliance Center availability for business and enterprise plans states.

To use DLP features, one user needs to be assigned with a E3 subscription. To use DLP for the whole organization, the users should having Exchange Online Plan 2 license.

Please feel free to let us know if you have any questions about this. In the meantime, I’ll consult more professional members to see if there is a clearer statement about this. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

    Best regards,

    Nerissa
