Sort By function disappeared in OneNote for Windows 10

Hello,

I just got a new Surface Book 3 and installed Office. However, in my OneNote for Windows 10 app the sort page by date / alphabetically function is NOT available anymore while it is available on my older laptop in OneNote for Windows 10 app. This mismatch does not make any sense.

See the screenshot below from my new laptop (Microsoft is the name of the folder; in this place, it used to be Sort by):

I checked the OneNote for Windows 10 app version and it is Version 16001.11126.20076.0. My old laptop has 16001.14131.20008.0. So it feels as if my version went backward!

And this is how it used to be on my old laptop and you can see the Sort by button:

Question: how can I get Sort by function on my laptop? I want the same functionality as I have on my older laptop (which seems to have a more recent version of OneNote for Windows 10 app).

Thank you!

Ares

    HI Ares123456789

Thank you for posting your question this community, Based on your description you would like to get Sort by function on your laptop.

According to your description, I suggest you can open settings > Options > turn off Legacy navigation panes in the upper right corner of your OneNote interface, this option may cause this issue.

At the same time, we have also tested it on our side, if we turned on this option, we may not see Sort By feature.

If the problem persists after trying the suggestion above, since you mentioned that you don’t experience the same issue in new version, and we have also tested it with new version, and this feature works fine on our side, so I suggest you update your OneNote for windows 10 to the latest version, try this operation

You can go to Microsoft Store to check if you can update your OneNote for Windows 10, If the Microsoft Store says that the OneNote for Windows 10 application is the latest version, can you check if your Windows operating system is updated to the latest version? Reference: Update Windows 10

    Best Regards

    Ethan

I have found a solution which highliths once again that MSFT consumer products are really poorly designed. The suggestions provided in this thread did not work. Ths is what worked (thanks to this thread on Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/OneNote/comments/nlt2bu/onenote_windows_10_version_update_problem/  - btw, clearly Reddit is more useful than MSFT's own forum).

    1. For whatever reason the version one OneNote for Windows 10 installed was not the latest version.
    2. When I went to the Microsoft App Store to check for updates, I kept getting the message that my app is up to date (which it was not).
    3. I uninstalled OneNote for Windows 10.
    4. I installed OneNote for Windows 10 again from the Miscrosoft App Store directly.

That has sovled the problem and I got the recent OneNote version where the function sort by is present.

I am leaving the detailed explanation here hoping that other users who encounter the same issue can benefit from this and solve their problems right away.

Hopefully, one day MSFT will get better at writing code for consumer facing applications.

    Best,

    Ares

You should instantly update your OneNote. Your version 16001.11126.20076.0 is from early 2019.
