Problem logging into Microsoft 365 via Safari

My new colleague is having significant problems logging into Microsoft 365 via Safari.

MacBook Pro (a fresh OS install)

MacOS 11.5.2

Safari 14.1.2

Our company is using ADFS to login, we have an Enterprise 365 E1 plan.

My colleague has OneDrive connected and is syncing both personal and team folders via the OneDrive Mac app.

They have the Teams desktop app running (with one curious bug - the time in Teams is -14 hours compared with the System clock)

They can login to *most* Microsoft products via Chrome - the exception is Teams via browser. If they login to the Microsoft account and move through Sharepoint, OneDrive, Word etc. in Chrome they all work fine. However, if they switch to Teams in the browser, they end up at a blank page.
If they login via Safari they are directed to the ADFS login and then back to the Microsoft "do you wish to remain logged in" page. However, after that they get the message "You cannot be logged in, please try again later".

I found another post that described similar errors and suggested deleting all Microsoft entries from keychain. I have done that and cleared all web data, cookies and history in Safari followed by a system re-start. They still cannot login in Safari. Under some circumstances, such as trying to login directly to Outlook.com, they get to a page which initiates a download and a blank file called "landing" is downloaded followed by a blank page in Safari.

I'm on the same enterprise plan, using an identically configured MacBook Pro and I can login on both Safari and Chrome, even simultaneously.

It is extremely frustrating that we cannot get this setup for my colleague.

Any suggestions?

Thanks Jay. I've actually had the opposite experience, I've found Safari to be very reliable with OneDrive and Sharepoint in particular. Some of it comes down to personal preference but I do enjoy the cross-platform benefits of Safari and feel Chrome is much more processor intensive on my Mac.

As my colleague had just started they have little to lose. So we have now commenced a complete re-install of the OS. I'll definitely report back.

    Scott,

I have been using Microsoft services with Safari for over 4 years now, and I must say, It's definitely Safari. It constantly breaks down with many services. I remember this one time, Azure Portal, would refuse to load or even allow me login. I spent hours with customer support trying to resolve it.

However, the Azure Portal, is just one instance of an issue. Safari, in general, seems to have problems with many services and not just Microsoft. May be, it's the tracking block feature, or the way Safari is built, or how rigidly Safari follows the web standards (or Apple makes up its own standards which the rest of the world does not follow).

My advice from experience is, dont waste time with Safari. Move to Edge or Chrome and you are good to go.

Hi Oliver, thank you for your response. I am convinced this is a problem with Safari on my colleague's laptop. To answer your questions:

    1. They CAN sign into Microsoft 365 services on Chrome. It works.
    2. They CANNOT sign into Microsoft 365 services on Safari.
    3. On safari, if we try to visit Outlook.com, when they see this screen:

    after this it shows:

This says "You can’t log in now. Please try again later."

If we try to visit onedrive.com then this happens:

    Image

a blank file called "landing" is automatically downloaded and Safari stays with a blank screen.

I tried unchecking " Prevent cross-site tracking“ but it made no difference. I also, again, cleared all web data, cookies and history. I repeatedly restarted Safari. Nothing works.

I then had my colleague remotely log into my, identical MacBook Pro. They could successfully login using their ID on my machine using Safari. We are both running the latest MacOS and Safari.

If try to use my login on Safari on my colleague's laptop then I get the same message "You can’t log in now. Please try again later."

It seems clear that the problem is not with my colleague's account, it is with Safari on her machine.

Do you have any more advice?

    Hello Scott,

Based on your whole description, the user with ADFS enabled cannot sign in Teams web app from Chrome or Safari on Mac machine, however you are using the same enterprise plan with no issue, my understanding is both of you are using the same domain, please clarify if I misunderstand your scenario, thanks.

If so, first it is more likely related to the Mac machine with teams issue but not the ADFS configuration. Actually as far as I know Teams web is not fully supported on Safari, please double check if the option " Prevent cross-site tracking“ is unchecked via Safari Preferences > Privacy, if not, please uncheck it and then re-start the Safari on his machine to see if it make any difference.

For the Chrome on Mac machine, please open Chrome settings window, > privacy and security tab > cookies and other site data > under Sites that can always use cookies > add > then select the "including third-party cookies on this site" check box > add following sites:

    [*.]microsoft.com

    [*.]microsoftonline.com

    [*.]teams.skype.com

    [*.]teams.microsoft.com

    [*.]sfbassets.com

    [*.]skypeforbusiness.com

If the user Chrome browser controlled by Group policy (GPO), please contact your IT admin to help add these sties, thanks. After that re-start the Chrome to see if it helps.

On another hand, if the issue persists, I'd like to collect

    1. a full screenshot of the error message when the user tried to login Teams web on Safafri
    2. If the affected user could sign in teams web on other devices, for example you could ask him to have a try on your Mac machine?
    3. If the issue happens when the user's Mac machine connected to company intranet or using extranet(internet)?

4.Can he successfully sign in before?

    Best Regards,

    Oliver
