Microsoft Word Numbering Spacing issue

Hi all,

My Girlfriend is having a Numbering issue on Word.

The spacing after each numbering to the text has been perfect up until now.

When a numbering is created, there is an automatic spacing (about the size of a tab space) between the numbering and the following text.

Does anyone know of a fix to this? We’ve tried a few things like creating a customised bullet style for the working numbering points above and applying that to the incorrectly spaced bullets but this didn’t work.

Also every numbering under this one is in the same format as the incorrect numbering as shown. Every numbering above this one is in the correct format as you can see in the photo.

She did add a couple of pictures in and we wrapped text “behind image”. Not sure if this would have affected the formatting of our numbering.

Any support on this would be great as my girlfriends UNI deadline is on Friday.

She is using Word Vers 16.52 on Apple Mac Book Pro.

Thanks so much

That's numbering, not bullets. You can fix this by creating a style, or modifying the existing style, if you are already using one. In the paragraph formatting for that style, set the Special dropdown to a higher amount for Hanging. If it's currently 0.25", set it to 0.5".

I can give you steps to follow if you can post screen shots to show exactly what commands you've used to create the numbering. If you're using Microsoft defaults, you may find that the numbering reverts to the default formatting if the numbering is updated.

You have to adjust the setting for the tab stop in the numbering definition, to accommodate larger/wider numbers. For more on numbering in Word for Mac, see https://www.brandwares.com/bestpractices/2016/06/outline-numbering-in-word-for-os-x/.

Heres a few screenshots of the formatting for my numbering. You can see thst there is an issue around the 2.10 numbering as this is where the tab/indent spacing starts. If i cursor at the end of the text "information' at 2.9 and hit enter, the tab space at 2.10 appears.

lll have a play around using the suggestions on this thread in order to modify. If none of these work, could i upload the document to one of you as you may see the issue straight away with the document under your control. I ony understand the basics of Word and im not very competant as you can probbly tell.

    Thanks so much.

Think I miss read the first part of your message. i will ensure that I create a new style and amend the hanging value to 0.5 and see if this works.

    Hi John,

Thank you for your prompt reply to my post.

So the hanging value was set to 0.63. I set it to 0.5 and the body of text next to the numbering moved across to the left so that it appears to be under the numbering point if that makes sense (text from the second line below the numbering). But this did not resolve the issue. I will be sure to see if the style has reverted to the Microsoft default style.

Please see the screenshot below for a general picture.

I will send a few more across of the style that I created shortly.

    Thanks John

    Dan
