Microsoft Word changing fonts according to input language (Windows)

Hi. My Microsoft Word font changes repeatedly whenever I switch language. For example, when I switch from an English keyboard to a Chinese one, the font changes from Callibri to DengXian. Using Chinese keyboard, I can then switch to KaiTi for example, and type without the font changing. However, once I change to a Japanese keyboard and want to type Japanese in KaiTi font, the font changes to Yu Mincho automatically. This also happens when I switch to Japanese keyboard.

I'm assuming the default font for Japanese input language is Yu Mincho. If this is so, how do I change the defaul font? Thank you!

    Hi pod1,

Welcome to Microsoft Office Community Forum. Thank you for sharing your concern with us today and we hope that all is well.

We understand that you are trying to set a default font on Word application and to know if you can have the same fonts to all language you installed. Even I also had tried to install and use different language in Word, I have noticed, it defaulted to a different font. So, to make sure this will not be the issue you can try the 1st troubleshooting we will provide below and please reply for any result. Let's do our best to get this addressed in timely manner.

As per your description you need assistance on how to change default font, we will provide steps below. Before that please answer or provide information regarding these questions:

    1. Are you a Microsoft 365 subscriber? (Family/Personal, part of Enterprise/Business or University/Organization)
    2. May we ask for what Office version you have on your PC? To check, please open Word > File tab > Account

    Suggested Troubleshooting:

Method 1: Repair an Office application

This will avoid any conflict that you may encounter in Word application before we proceed with setting new default font.

Please follow the link at the top and locate for the highlighted red the picture below. Kindly follow the steps provided after selecting the right Windows Operating System.

    Method 2: Create new Normal.dotm

Normal.dotm stores your preference in creating a document all the fonts, style, paragraph spacing, layout, etc., This is stored locally in your device however it belongs to non accessible system files. To create a new Normal.dotm, please review these support article:

    Steps:

    Open a blank Word document.

Home tab > under Styles, look for Normal > right click and choose Modify > change and set new default font, color, spacing, etc.,> select Ok

Next, File tab > Save as > Browse > Paste this location in Address bar C:\Users%Username%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates > on Save as Type select Word Macro-Enabled Template > Just save Doc1

Next, Close Word application > Open location C:\Users%Username%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates by searching this on Windows search bar

Lastly, Rename Normal as Normal.old > Rename Doc1 as Normal.

Note: We need to keep the Normal.old.dotm incase you wanted to go back to your previous font settings.

Kindly let us know, if there is any misunderstanding of our description by sending us a reply.

We look forward to your response. If you have other clarifications about this matter, you can get back to us by replying to this post.

    Sincerely,

    Kathy A.
