How to add a space before each superscript?

A Word document contains many superscripts (always a single numeral from 1 to 7) that follow immediately after a word. I want to add a space between the word and the superscript. I've been trying to do it with Find and Replace but can't quite get there. Would appreciate help.

There's no indication of what specific attempts you've made or what "can't quite get there" is intended to convey so if this is redundant please forgive me but it works here provided the document is as simple as you suggest:

  1. Go to Edit> Find> Advanced Find and Replace
  2. Click the Replace button
  3. If necessary click the expander button [🔽] in the lower left corner of the dialog window
  4. Type ^# in the Find What field
    1. Click the Format button at the bottom of the pane
    2. Select Font
    3. Tick the box for Superscript
    4. Click OK
  5. In the Replace With field press the <space bar> once then type ^&
  6. Apply Superscript as described in the 4 steps above
  7. Either Replace All or Replace on a 1-by-1 basis if you prefer

Don't forget to use the No Formatting button on both fields when you're done. It will remain in effect unless you do so may interfere with future use of Find & Replace if you don't notice that it's active.

When the Advanced Find & Replace dialog is expanded click the Special button at the bottom. It provides a descriptive listing of the functions. When you select one it inserts the corresponding code into the field you're active in. The content of the list varies depending on whether you're in the Find what field or the Replace with field.

    Hi

Thank you for your update and reply. You are currently operating on Windows. Please try the following:

You find the first superscripts, click Rederences>Next Footnote to see if you can find the next superscripts

If not, please send the file to me via private message, and I will help you to test it!

Thank you for your understanding and support!

    Best Regards
    Ethan

Thanks very much for your quick reply, Ethan.

The superscripts are in the main body, not in footnotes. They are superscript numerals inserted automatically by the original program to identify generation numbers in a genealogical report. That report has been opened in Word 365 (Windows, not Mac). Each superscript immediately follows a word, and is not part of a formula or mathematical notation. I want to be able to find each superscript number and insert a space immediately before it.

You've said "If it is the first type, it can be found directly by you after my test." but I don't understand what test you are referring to. I tried following your method, but could not get it to work. Any further help will be much appreciated.

    Hi

Thank you for your question in this community. I am willing to help you solve your problem. According to your description:

The superscript you mentioned, how did you insert it? Is throughImageThis feature inserted
Orthrough “Insert Footnote” function to insert Footnote ?

If it is the first type, it can be found directly by you after my test. If it is footnote, you need to:

use Edit>Find>Advanced Find and Replace. (The Edit command is on the macOS menu, not the Ribbon).

After opening that dialog, click on the Down-Pointing Arrowhead button, then on the Format dropdown. Choose Style, then choose the Footnote Reference style.

Then replace it. I hope it may help you solve your problem. If I understand it incorrectly, please provide more detailed information to let me help you solve your problem!

    Best Regards
    Ethan
