OneNote for iOS and Win10 Sync error E000006B blg57 - even on new notebooks

I seem to have a problem similar to many posters here (eg https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/msoffice/forum/msoffice_onenote-mso_win10-msoversion_other/onenote-sync-problem/19b89dc6-34fb-4701-b825-c9cdb7e49bad?messageId=f17222c5-889f-4eab-bc29-bae4937c3a1e).

Background:

  • I predominantly use the Desktop OneNote 2016 application due to its powerful features.
  • I have approximately 10 notebooks.

I occasionally have Syncing issues with the desktop, but it seems to overcome problems itself.

Recently however, following some notebook reorganisation I've noticed that the iOS app is no longer syncing. If OneNote can't be used on the go then it is of much less value.

OneNote for Windows 10 and the iOs app report error E000006B blg57. This seems to occur only for notebooks that are not shared. Notebooks that I have previously shared (and are still shared) do not exhibit an issue.

My setup:

  • OneNote 2016 on a couple of Windows 10 machines,(Work and Personal)  (no Office 365 licence, just a perpetual licence for both)
  • OneNote for Windows 10 on one Windows 10 machine (Personal).
  • OneNote on iPhone (latest version of app, and have tried deleting and reinstalling) and iPad.
  • My work PC is associated with two MS accounts (one work, one personal).
  • None of the notebooks are very large, so I don't believe I'm running into the often cited space issues

I have tried deleting and reinstalling both the OneNote for Windows10 and the iPhone app, but it still has the same sync errors.

I have tried web based OneNote on https://www.onenote.com/ and it doesn't report any issues and seems to be aligned with the OneNote 2016 version, but I'm afraid I'm missing some content.

Attempts to debug:

Thinking I have corrupt historical notebooks, have tried following:

  1. Create notebook from OneNote2016, add some content and attempt to access elsewhere
    1. Onenote.com can see it, open it and see latest edits
    2. Onenote for Windows 2010 can see the new notebook, but on opening is stuck at the "Loading" window. Icon shows exclamation.
    3. Onenote for iOS can see the new notebook, but on opening gives a sync error "OneNote can't connect to the network. We'll try to sync when the network is available (Error code E000006B blg57)"
  2. Create notebook from OneNote for ios, add some content and attempt to access elsewhere
    1. Onenote.com can see it, open it but advises "this notebook is empty"
    2. Onenote for Windows 2010 can see the new notebook, but on opening advises there are no sections. Icon DOES NOT show exclamation.
    3. Onenote for iOS can see the new notebook, but advises that any edits "OneNote can't connect to the network. We'll try to sync when the network is available (Error code E000006B blg57)"

I presume creation of note in OneNote.com will show same results per #1, and OneNote for Windows 10 will show results per #2.

It is astounding that such fundamental errors seem to have crept into a premier MS product. I look forward to resolution.

    Hi Topdown123,

    Thanks for posting back.

Recently, we have seen similar reports in this community, I would like to make a summary of this case, so it is easier to identify the issue:

    Issue Description:

Users got the error 'E000006B blg57' and cannot sync OneNote notebooks when using the desktop/mobile app.

    Environment:

    OneNote desktop app on Mac/Windows

    OneNote mobile app on iOS/Android.

    Suggested solution:

Considering that the issue affects several accounts across different tenants, it is probably caused by a service incident that is un-reported currently. As we don’t have the abilities and resources to solve the problem from the back end, we'd like to suggest you:

    1. If your account is a Microsoft account (personal account), please report the issue to our support agent.

Go to Contact us, click Get support in the browser instead, report the issue and you will see “Chat with support agent”). After that, you can talk with our agent and report the issue.

    1. If your account is a Work or school account (business account), please contact your admin/IT department and let them open a support ticket via Microsoft 365 admin center to escalate the problem to the relevant team straightly for further assistance.

We are sorry for the inconvenience to your work, and we sincerely hope the problem can be fixed as soon as possible.

Note: to avoid losing your data, please note to back up the unsynchronized notes before the issue gets solved.

    Best Regards,

    George

    Hi George,

    Thanks for your prompt reply.

Yes, I believe you explain it well, that the OneNote 2016 is syncing with OneNote Web, but the other apps (both iOS and OneNote for Win10) are having problems.

    Regarding:

Please try the following steps to open the notebooks in OneNote for Windows 10 and OneNote for iOS.

    1. Make sure the online notebook has the latest content.
    2. Close the notebook in OneNote for Windows 10 or OneNote for iOS.
    3. Open the online notebook in the browser and click “Open in app” to re-open it.

I am able to do this, and in OneNote.com when I click "Open In Desktop App" I do get the latest content. This is in-line with my experiments earlier.

    Answers for your additional questions:

    1. Does the issue exist in all notebooks or specific notebooks opened in OneNote for Windows 10 and OneNote for iOS?

All notebooks that are not shared with anyone. As I explained, even if I create a new notebook with one section & page and one word of content on OneNote.com or OneNote 2016 these are accessible one both OneNote.com and OneNote 2016 but in the iOS apps and OneNote for Win10 they do not sync and I get error E000006B blg57.

    1. Please make sure OneNote for Windows 10 and OneNote for iOS are the latest version.

They are, I tried this before lodging my ticket.

My iOS app is v16.52 (it was uninstalled and freshly installed to try and fix the issue, but to no success).

Windows 10 is v16001.14326.20018.0 - it was uninstalled and freshly installed from Windows Store - to no success.

    1. Please try to temporarily turn off the firewall or anti-virus software, then check again.

There is no anti-virus or firewall on my iOS devices. I have tried on a mobile(celluar) network for iOS devices and this didn't work.

I have tried on two different PC's with different anti virus and firewall suppliers.

    1. Are these devices connecting the same network?

All devices are on the same wifi network. The only time I tried a different network was with my iOS devices when I went to mobile(celluar) network and this didn't work.

    Further information:

I have installed OneNote for Windows 10 on my work PC (which as I said has OneNote 2016 seemingly working ok) and a small number of the notebooks (including one created in iOS) are accessible on this machine. Other notebooks give error E000006B blg57. Once I could access the notebook created on iOS on work PC it would then permit me access on iOS and allow me to see the latest update.

There is something fundamentally wrong and semi-unpredicatable with my account and I'd welcome it fixed.

    Thanks

    Hi Topdown123,

Thanks for posting in the community.

According to your description, when you use OneNote for Windows 10 and OneNote for iOS, they will display the sync error message. For OneNote, it syncs the local content to the online notebook (when you edit the notebook in the OneNote application and sync it well) or syncs the online notebook to the local (when you try to sync the content or open the notebook in the OneNote application).

Since you mentioned the online notebook (OneNote for Web) has the latest content, it means OneNote 2016 syncs all local notebooks well to online.

If the sync issue still exists, I would like to collect more information.

    1. Does the issue exist in all notebooks or specific notebooks opened in OneNote for Windows 10 and OneNote for iOS?
    2. Please make sure OneNote for Windows 10 and OneNote for iOS are the latest version.
    3. Please try to temporarily turn off the firewall or anti-virus software, then check again.
    4. Are these devices connecting the same network?

    Regards,

    George
