Outline View vs Print View

I converted an old *.doc file to a new *.docx file. In my Word document and while in Outline View I have structured the document outline the way I want it. When I return to the print view the Outline seen in the print view stayed the same as it was. Why aren't these two views connected? Why am I seeing different outlines in each of these views?

There is no way to "synchronize" the views so that a collapsed heading in Print Layout view is also collapsed in Outline view (if that is what you are asking).

If you mean that you want to define indents that are displayed in Print Layout view and that are also printed, you have to modify the styles you are using (heading styles and possible other styles as well, depending on what you want).

For a numbered outline with indents, define the indents in the Multilevel List dialog box; see https://shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/numbering20072010.html.

Are you referring to collapsed and expanded text paragraphs in Outline view versus the corresponding display in Print Layout view? These are independent of each other, except of course that both views make use of heading levels.

    Hi Brett,

    Thanks for posting back.

To better understand the situation and help you, could you share following information? Thanks for your patience and effort.

1.How do you create the tabs or indents in Outline view? By using the Expand (+) and Collapse(-) button from Outlining tab in the ribbon?

2.Could you share some screenshots about the tabs and indents in Outline view?

    Best Regards,

    Tina

Thanks for the input. This reinforces what I already assumed. What I do not understand is why the tabs or indents in the outline view cant be linked to drive the tabs or indents of the print view. Is there a way to link these features so they remain synced together?
