How to build an interactive retirement calculator in Excel

Hello,

First post here.

I maintain my retirement details in a spreadsheet. I maintain income that I will receive from my pension, if I retire early vs. at the allowed retirement age. I also have social security income at various ages. Lastly, I track the current value of my retirement accounts.

I want to use this data to understand 'what if' scenarios. e.g.

  • with the anticipated retirement incomes, while maintaining the current monthly expenses, how long will the savings last if I retire at age 62
  • running the same scenario for different ages - 65, 67, 70, etc.
  • I also want to these calculations to incorporate a percentage increase in annual expenses to reflect inflation

Is this easily doable in Excel? If yes, can you point me in the right direction?

Thanks in advance.

As for your question, the answer is quite subjective.

Yes, it is possible to do it easily here in excel.

However, it is necessary to have knowledge of the calculation routines.

What I recommend is downloading a ready-made template, and studying the changes you want to perform. The example I'm going to leave here, it's an official microsoft template, very well elaborated.

take a look and see if you like it.
