Screen tearing error (unknown cause)

  • In the picture in the red area is Powerpoint with a serious error, at first I just thought it was because my computer was faulty but no, on a few small forums I also had the same error. This error seems to be from Powerpoint, but the first time it runs, it works very well, only the second error onwards. The error started appearing from Windows 10 version 1909, so far there is no way to fix it
  • This error still exists on Windows 11
  • Recently someone on a forum (not public) reported that, after upgrading a device to Windows 11, not only in Powerpoint, this bug spread to all Windows applications and tear the entire screen.
  • I also moved this question to Windows thread but still no way to fix it

( I am the representative of a small forum to post bugs from Windows and other Microsoft applications they wonder )

    • Hi Greg, we have a good news in the process of repairing the graphics driver, when we tried switching back to the default Windows graphics driver ( Basic Display... ) everything worked fine again.
    • But that's only members with 4:3 aspect ratio screen can use temporarily, other members with other aspect ratio like 16:9 they can't use when the screen doesn't display the correct aspect ratio but is stretched, because the default Windows graphics ( Basic Display... ) does not have a 16:9" aspect ratio

    • It seems this is a graphics driver error, the machine we tested to fix currently has an old graphics card ( g33/g31 ) and windows update has an update for this g33/g31 driver.
    • What do we do next, because we can't update that driver, the error will return, which while Windows default graphics ( Basic Display... ) doesn't have 16:9 aspect ratio or resolution bigger ?

    • Everything is blurred
    • On Windows 11, all rounded corners are lost

    Thank you very much

Hi Greg ,we will try each of the above and hope they fix the problem. This will take some time, but we'll let you know as soon as we have new results. Thank you very much

In the picture, everything is torn perpendicularly, it shows not only on one of Powerpoint but all other pages. During use does not change anything, the error remains the same. In the left column there is an error of losing the preview slide, in the right column there is a tearing error. In the middle, where the main operation is, if you insert a video or photo, it will immediately be torn and noisy. When showing, it also tear the slides, but we fixed the slide show error by turning off slideshow acceleration in Powerpoint settings (link below)

Hi Loc. I'm Greg, 10 years awarded Windows MVP, specializing in Installation, Performance, Troubleshooting and Activation, here to help you.

Please explain where in the screenshot the screen is tearing. It looks normal to me. Tearing is when it doesn't refresh and mixes images of other pages in, but those appear to all be from the same Powerpoint page.

If not 1) Try repairing Office following this guide:
    https://support.office.com/en-gb/article/repair...
If that doesn't fix it then reinstall Office as shown here:

    https://support.office.com/en-us/article/downlo...

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/down...

    https://www.lifewire.com/install-microsoft-offi...
    2) The Display driver is so important here that merely updating it is sometimes not enough. So let's try everything possible to get it working correctly:

First make sure you have updated the Display driver from the PC or Display adapter maker's Support Downloads web page for your exact model number, HP Serial Number or Dell Service Tag - from the sticker on the PC.

While there check also for newer chipset, BIOS/UEFI firmware (very important), network, sound, USB3 and other drivers, comparing to the ones presently installed in Device Manager reached by right clicking the Start Menu.

If necessary first remove the old driver using DDU https://www.wagnardsoft.com/content/ddu-guide-t... (not necessary with Microsoft Basic driver which is a placeholder if nothing else is available) and/or installing in Safe Mode with Networking (so you have internet), or Safe Mode, accessed by one of these methods: https://www.digitalcitizen.life/4-ways-boot-saf...

If new driver still won't install DDU see Lightning Leon's Answer here: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-US/subject/for...

If this doesn't give you the latest or ideal driver for what you need, compare it to the driver offered by the Intel driver update Utility here: http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/...

or the Nvidia GeForce scanner here: https://www.nvidia.com/tr-tr/geforce/geforce-ex...

or the AMD autodect utility here: http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/P...

For Display issues one fix that is working is to Roll back or Uninstall the Driver on the Display Device > Driver tab, restart PC to reinstall driver.

You can also try older drivers in Device Manager > Display device > Driver tab > Update Driver > Browse > Let Me Pick.

Then you will know you've tried everything in addition to Windows Update drivers.

Adjust the screen resolution until it fits and looks best at Settings > System > Display.

Feel free to ask back any questions. Please report back results for all steps given so I know what else to suggest if necessary.
