Word document appears to have no spaces between words

I have been sent a Word document to edit. In many places there appears to be no space between the words (and hitting the space bar makes no difference), but when I reveal codes and look closely there is at least one space-dot (quite often superimposed on/under the first character of the second word. What is going on and how do I get the file to behave/display correctly?

Press Ctrl+D to activate the Font dialog.

    Activate the Advanced tab.

Has Spacing been set to Condensed?

If so, select all affected text (if you want to select the entire document, press Ctrl+A), and set Spacing to Normal.

At first attempt I thought this didn't help: highlighting the relevant lines/words showed they were apparently Normal spacing ... but highlighting the whole paragraph showed an empty field for the spacing setting (which I guess means more than one setting is active within the paragraph). Setting spacing as normal then fixed all the odd spacing! Many thanks
