Zipping (Compressing) PDF or Word docs

Whenever I zip (compress) a file, Google does something to create a Google link not a compressed file folder.

I right-click on the PDF or Word doc, select Send to then Compressed (zip) file, and it creates the Google link that can't be used to attach to an e-mail.

How do I fix this?

    FYI: current Office 4 letter file formats ending in "X" or "M" are already zip files.

    There is little benefit to zipping them again. Sometimes it even increases the file size.

    The only benefit is if you zip a folder containing more than one file to provide a single download instead of multiple separate downloads.

    Why are you mentioning Google?

    Where are the file saved, in OneDrive, on your local computer or in GDrive?

    I had a PDF file that I needed to upload to a business site (Comergence) but it said it was too large. When I tried to zip it, it just created a Google link. So, I thought to convert it to a Word doc to see if that would upload. I got the same message...too large. So, I tried to zip the Word doc and got the same Google link. The Google link won't upload to the business site. I tried to e-mail the Google link to the company that needed the document, but it wouldn't open.

    I did this on my desktop. This never happened with Windows 8. When I zipped a file, it created a file folder that I was able to upload to business sites or attach to an e-mail. I am using Windows 10 on an HP ENVY laptop.

    Sounds like you need a better way to make Zip files. Here's a free program that does it well: 7-zip

    Excuse me, to clarify the problem:

    1. Are you using any program to compress the file?
    2. What means that Google" create a link"? What operative system are you using?
    3. What happen if you compress a file and latter try to recover the original file from the compressed file?
