Hi David Whittle (david),
Thanks for your post in Microsoft Community.
It sounds like you are encountering an issue with translator in Word. This may be caused by Internet. You could
- Press Windows + R > type: inetcpl.cpl >press Enter to open Internet options > Advanced > find the Security module > check Use SSL 3.0, TLS 1.0, and TLS 1.1, TLS 1.2 > OK.
- Enter winword /safe after pressing and holding Windows+R to see the usage of Word in this mode. If it is normal, check the File > Options > Add-ins > uncheck all the checkboxes in the COM add-in list > click Apply > OK > restart Word to see the effect.
- With Word closed, navigate to C:\Users\xxx\AppData\roaming\Microsoft\Templates and find Normal.dotm(.dot) to rename it. The name is arbitrary but needs to be distinguished from the original Normal. After the Normal.dotm is automatically generated, reopen Word to see the effect.
- Which version of Office are you currently using? Please click File> Account and take a screenshot of the complete product information. (In order to protect your privacy, please pay attention to cover up your account information), please try to update the office to the latest version to see the usage.
- If you still cannot use the translation function after trying the above methods, you may need to obtain and install the translation-related plug-in Microsoft Translator to see the effect.
Feel free to post back if you need further assistance.
